Why does my laptop overheat on the bed?
Most laptops take cool air in through vents on the underside. A duvet, a sofa cushion or a lap does not merely block some of that airflow, it seals it, and fabric also insulates the base so the heat that does escape has nowhere to go.
This is the cheapest overheating problem to fix on the entire site: any rigid flat object between the machine and the soft surface restores most of the airflow. A hardback book works.

Look at the underside: most laptops have vent grilles there. On a duvet those are covered, and the fan pulls against a closed door.
The fix
A hard, flat surface between machine and fabric: a tray, a board, a large book, a lap desk. Total cost from zero, and it is usually the entire fix.
2. Insulation as well as obstruction

Bedding does not just block airflow, it holds the heat that radiates from the base, so the machine sits in a pocket of its own exhaust.
The fix
Elevation matters as much as rigidity: a stand or a tray with feet gives the base air on all sides, not just a flat plane to sit on.
3. Exhaust blowing into a cushion

Some machines exhaust from the rear or side; against a pillow or the arm of a sofa, that hot air is recirculated straight back into the intakes.
The fix
Leave clear space behind and beside the machine, not only underneath it.
4. Sustained work in the worst place

Gaming, exports and long calls on a bed combine the heaviest load with the worst cooling; the machine throttles far sooner than it would at a desk.
The fix
Move heavy work to a hard surface. Light browsing on a duvet is genuinely fine; a two-hour render is not.
5. Dust arriving faster

Fabric sheds fibres, and a fan pulling against bedding pulls those fibres into the heatsink. Machines that live on beds clog sooner.
The fix
A shorter service interval if the bed is your usual desk, and the hard surface again, which reduces the intake of fibres as well as improving airflow.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test twice in ten minutes: once on the bed, once on a hard surface. Two curves from the same machine minutes apart, one sliding and one flatter, are the most immediately convincing before-and-after this site can produce, and the fix costs nothing.

- Is it bad to use a laptop on your lap?
- For light work, no, though the base gets uncomfortably warm on many machines. For sustained heavy work it is the same sealed-intake problem as a duvet, with the added detail that the heat is going into you. A lap desk solves both at once.
- Do laptop cooling pads work on a bed?
- Better than anywhere else, because they provide the rigid surface and the elevation that bedding removes. Much of the benefit comes from the flat base rather than the fans, which is why a plain board often performs surprisingly close to a powered pad.
- Why is my laptop fine on the desk but hot on the sofa?
- Because the desk was providing airflow you never noticed. Hard flat surfaces leave the underside vents open and give the exhaust somewhere to go; upholstery does neither. The machine is behaving correctly in both places, with very different amounts of air.
