Phone and tablet test. The parts you rely on.
Before you buy one used, or after a drop, run the parts a phone or tablet is made of: the touch screen across its whole surface, camera, microphone, speakers, a dead pixel sweep, the connection, and the motion sensors. Each ends in a plain verdict with what to do.
8 checks · about 4 minutes
- Touch screen
- Webcam
- Microphone
- Speakers
- Screen
- Dead pixels
- Internet
- Motion sensors
One check after another, with your progress along the top and a plain verdict on each. Nothing you show the camera or say into the microphone leaves this page.
What it measures
Measured here, not assumed.
In the order the checks run.
- Touch screen
- Coverage of the whole surface and the most fingers seen at once.
- Camera, microphone, speakers
- The camera's picture and frame rate, the microphone's level and background noise, and a left and right tone.
- Dead pixels
- Solid colours full screen, for dots that stay the wrong colour.
- Internet
- Latency, download and upload over the connection the phone is on.
- Motion sensors
- Gravity at rest, orientation as you turn it, and vibration where the browser offers it.
If it fails
The usual failures, and what fixes each.
- A patch of the screen will not register
- Remove the screen protector and test again; a lifted or cracked protector is the usual cause. If it persists, the digitiser is damaged.
- The camera or microphone is refused
- Allow it in the browser's site settings, then in the system's privacy settings for the browser.
- A sensor does not respond
- Restart the phone and run it again. A sensor still silent after a restart needs service.
Where a browser stops
What it cannot tell you.
- Battery health, which phones do not share with web pages.
- Cellular signal, SIM, Face ID, fingerprint and NFC, which no browser can see.
- Screen sharing, which on a phone is done by apps, not the browser.
Privacy
Nothing leaves this page.
The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.
Questions
Phone and tablet test, answered
- How do I test a used phone before buying it?
- Open this page on the phone and run the whole test with the seller present. It covers the screen, camera, microphone, speakers, pixels, connection and sensors. Check battery health in the phone's own settings, which no web page can read.
- Does this work on an iPhone?
- Yes, in Safari or any iOS browser. The vibration check is the one part an iPhone browser cannot do.
- Is anything recorded?
- No. The camera picture, the microphone and the sensor readings stay on this page.
