Video call test. Before the interview, not during it.

Check your camera, microphone, speakers and connection in two minutes, against what Zoom, Teams and Meet need. The picture and sound stay on this page.

Runs like the stress test: one check after another, with the progress along the top. Nothing you show the camera or say into the microphone leaves this page.

What it measures

Measured here, not assumed.

01

Camera

Live picture, real resolution and frame rate, and whether the light is good enough to be seen clearly.

02

Microphone and speakers

A level meter and a clip you can play back, the room's background noise, and a left and right tone.

03

Internet

Latency, jitter, download and upload against the 1.5 to 3 Mbps a call needs each way. Jitter is what freezes video on a fast connection.

04

Browser and settings

Browser version, cookies and pop-ups, which call links and web clients depend on.

If it fails

The usual failures, and what fixes each.

The camera or microphone was refused
Click the camera icon in the address bar and choose Allow, then run again. Check the system privacy settings for the browser and the call app.
Video freezes but the speed looks fine
That is jitter, usually Wi-Fi interference. Sit closer to the router or use a cable, and pause other devices.
It works here but not in Zoom or Teams
The app chose a different camera or microphone. Pick the device that worked here in the app's settings, and allow the app in the system's privacy settings.

Where a browser stops

What it cannot tell you.

  • How you look and sound in the call app itself, which picks its own devices and applies its own processing.
  • Echo on the other side, which only the other person hears.
  • The other person's connection.

Privacy

Nothing leaves this page.

The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.

Questions

Video call test, answered

How do I test my camera and microphone before a Zoom call?
Run the check above. It opens the camera and microphone on this page, shows the picture and a level meter, and tells you if either is refused or not found. Then pick the same devices in Zoom's settings.
What internet speed do I need for a video call?
About 1.5 Mbps each way for a one-to-one call and 3 Mbps or more for group calls in HD. Steadiness matters more than speed: high jitter freezes video on a fast connection.
Is anything recorded?
No. The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped. The clip you can play back stays in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave.
