Why is my laptop fan not spinning?

Two very different situations share one symptom. A modern efficient laptop under light load is supposed to be silent, and many run their fans only above a temperature threshold. A machine that is hot, working hard and still silent has a problem that needs attention rather than patience.

The test is simple: load the machine deliberately for several minutes and listen. If the fan never starts while the chassis becomes hot, treat it as a fault. A stopped fan turns every other thermal problem into a serious one.

Check the model: MacBook Airs and a growing number of thin machines have no fan at all. Nothing will ever spin.

The fix

Nothing to fix. Those machines manage heat by settling their performance instead, which is a different article and an expected behaviour.

Many laptops keep the fan stopped entirely below a temperature or load threshold, for silence. Load it hard for five minutes and it should start.

The fix

If it starts under load, everything is working. This is the most common cause of the worry and it resolves in five minutes of testing.

Maker software (Vantage, Armoury Crate, MyASUS and the like) and some BIOS settings offer silent or passive modes that keep fans stopped for longer, trading performance.

The fix

Switch to a balanced or performance fan profile for heavy work. The silence was a setting, and the throttling was its price.

4. The fan has failed or is obstructed

Hot machine, heavy load, no airflow at the exhaust, no sound. Sometimes accompanied by a brief buzz at startup as the fan tries and fails to spin.

The fix

Stop heavy use and have it serviced. A seized fan usually means a failed bearing or a cable that has come loose during a previous repair; both are inexpensive parts and urgent ones.

The fan works when forced by a diagnostic or maker tool but never starts on its own, suggesting the machine believes it is cooler than it is.

The fix

A BIOS or firmware update from the maker resolves a surprising share of these; failing that, it is a service visit rather than a setting.

Measure it instead of guessing

The test is a controlled way to make the fan prove itself: several minutes of sustained load is exactly the condition under which any working fan must start. A silent machine that also slides steeply in that test has told you two things at once, and the second explains the first.

What software cannot tell you here

  • We cannot read fan speed; no browser can. Your ears at the exhaust vent are the instrument, and the load is what makes the test valid.
  • We cannot distinguish a seized fan from a firmware fault; the maker's own diagnostic tool usually can.

Should my laptop fan run all the time?
On most modern laptops, no: stopping the fan at low temperatures is deliberate and desirable. What matters is that it starts under sustained load. A fan that never starts under load, and a fan that never stops at idle, are both worth investigating, for opposite reasons.
How do I test if my laptop fan works?
Load the machine heavily for five minutes and listen and feel at the exhaust vent. Most maker diagnostics also include a fan test that spins it deliberately. If neither produces airflow while the machine is hot, treat it as a failed fan.
Can I use a laptop with a broken fan?
Only briefly and lightly, and not by choice.
