Gaming setup test. Every input, and the screen.

Keyboard, mouse, controller and monitor, checked in one run: rollover, bounced clicks, stick drift, real refresh rate and dead pixels. Then the free stress test for the PC itself.

Runs like the stress test: one check after another, with the progress along the top. Nothing you show the camera or say into the microphone leaves this page.

What it measures

Measured here, not assumed.

01

Keyboard

Every key you press lights up on a map; the most held at once is the rollover figure; a key still down at the end is flagged.

02

Mouse

Every button, the scroll wheel, a bounced double click detector and an estimate of the polling rate from movement.

03

Controller

Buttons and sticks live from the Gamepad API, and the amount the sticks report while untouched, which is drift.

04

Screen

Five seconds of frames to find the real refresh rate, then solid colours to reveal dead or stuck pixels.

If it fails

The usual failures, and what fixes each.

A stick drifts
Raise the dead zone in the game as a stop-gap. A stick module replacement fixes it, and some makers repair it under warranty.
Single clicks arrive as doubles
A worn switch. Replace the mouse or its switch. Check the double-click speed setting is not set very slow first.
Only 60 Hz on a high refresh monitor
Set the refresh rate in the display settings and the graphics driver panel, and use DisplayPort or a cable rated for the rate.

Where a browser stops

What it cannot tell you.

  • Input latency end to end. A browser cannot time the switch, the cable and the game together.
  • DPI and sensor accuracy. Polling rate is estimated from event timing; DPI is not readable.
  • Whether the controller works in a specific game or launcher, which has its own driver layer.

Privacy

Nothing leaves this page.

The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.

Questions

Gaming setup test, answered

How do I test if my keyboard has ghosting?
Hold five or six letter keys at once in the keyboard test. If some do not light up, the keyboard has limited rollover. Gaming keyboards register every key; basic ones drop keys past two or three.
How do I check my controller for stick drift?
Connect it, press a button so the browser lists it, then let go of the sticks. The test reads how far they sit from centre at rest; above about 10 percent is drift you will feel.
How do I check my monitor's real refresh rate?
The refresh test counts frames for five seconds and reports the rate the screen actually runs at. A 144 Hz monitor showing 60 is set to 60 somewhere in the system.
