Why is my laptop fan so loud?
A loud fan is the machine reporting heat, and it is almost never wrong about it. Something is making the heat: a background process, an update installing, dust that forces the fan to work harder for the same cooling, or genuinely heavy work.
The dishonest fix is quieting the fan; the honest one is removing the heat. Fan-control utilities that just slow the fan trade noise now for throttling and heat-soak later.

2. Dust: the fan works harder for less cooling

The fix
The cooling clean-out. Noise drops immediately afterwards because the fan no longer needs its top range for everyday heat.
3. The workload genuinely warrants it

The fix
Nothing is wrong. Headroom helps: hard surface, clean vents, cooler room, all move the fan's operating point down for the same work.
4. A Windows update event (the recurring spike)

The fix
Confirm the update work has finished, install the maker's newest drivers, and if a known-bad KB is the cause, the follow-up patch usually lands within weeks. Uninstalling the KB is the interim option where the noise is unbearable.
5. The fan itself is dying

The sound changed character, grinding, rattling, buzzing, rather than just volume. Bearing wear sounds mechanical, not like air.
The fix
Replace the fan promptly. A failing fan precedes a failed one, and a failed one turns a noise problem into an overheating problem.
Measure it instead of guessing
The fan and the curve tell one story from two sides. If the fan is loud and the measured curve still slides, cooling is losing even at full effort: service time. If the fan is loud and the curve holds flat, the noise is the machine successfully defending its speed, and the fix is heat reduction, not fan suppression.
What software cannot tell you here
