When should I replace my laptop, and when should I repair it?
Replace when one of three things is true: the machine's measured sustained performance no longer fits your actual work; its OS is leaving support; or the pending repair bill crosses about half the price of an equivalent replacement.
Before any of those, repair usually wins: a cooling service, a battery, and an SSD are the three high-return interventions, together costing a fraction of a new machine and addressing the majority of 'time for a new laptop' feelings.

1. Replace: the ceiling no longer fits the work

After servicing (clean cooling, adequate RAM, SSD), the sustained measurement still falls short of what your actual workload needs. That is the machine's honest ceiling, and ceilings do not respond to repairs.
The fix
Replace with data: you know your current settled level; a candidate machine's sustained figures (not its boost figures) tell you what you are actually buying. This is the upgrade decision made like an engineer rather than a shopper.
2. Replace: the OS is leaving support

The maker's support list says your model will not run the next supported OS. An unsupported machine online is a security liability regardless of speed.
The fix
Plan replacement around the support date, not the failure date. (And a supported-but-slow machine is often a repair case, the two lists are different.)
3. Replace: repairs are stacking

The 50% rule: any single repair, or credible near-term stack of repairs, crossing half the cost of an equivalent replacement. Board-level faults on old consumer machines usually land here.
The fix
Stop investing. Exception worth knowing: machines with unusual value to you, keyboard feel, ports, repairability, can rationally justify crossing the rule, knowingly.
4. Repair: the cooling service (the most-skipped winner)

The fix
Clean and repaste. On the world's actual laptop fleet this single intervention prevents more replacements than any other, and its result is verifiable in a before/after measurement.
5. Repair: battery, and drive-to-SSD

Battery under 80% health with a short-day complaint; any machine still booting from a mechanical drive.
The fix
Both are transplants, not surgery: modest cost, transformative result. An old-but-solid laptop with new battery, SSD and serviced cooling is the best value computer most people can own.
6. Repair vs replace on RAM: the arithmetic case

Memory pressure at 90%+ during normal work, on a machine whose RAM is socketed (many are not, check your model before promising yourself this fix).
The fix
Where upgradeable, RAM is cheap and decisive for tab-heavy work. Where soldered, memory shortfall becomes a replacement argument: one more number for the decision.
The decision in one paragraph
Measure the machine serviced, not sick: fix the cooling, check the battery, then run a sustained test. If the settled level fits your work, the laptop stays and the repairs were the whole answer. If it does not, and only then, you are shopping, with your requirement written down as a number and every candidate comparable against it. Most people replace one year too early or three years too late; a measurement replaces both errors with a date.
Measure it instead of guessing
This entire decision is one comparison: the machine's settled level versus your workload's needs. The test gives the first number; being honest about the second is on you. Run it before the shop visit and after, the delta is what your repair money bought, and the remainder is what a replacement would have to beat.

- Is it worth repairing a 6-year-old laptop?
- Age alone says little; condition and ceiling say everything. A six-year-old business machine with a fresh battery and serviced cooling often measures better than a new budget laptop. Repair when the measured ceiling still fits the work; the calendar is not a diagnosis.
- What lasts longer, and what fails first?
- First to fade: the battery (chemistry, 2–4 years to noticeable). First to choke: cooling (dust, 18–24 months to measurable). First to genuinely fail: mechanical drives and fans (moving parts). The processor and memory essentially do not wear, which is why refurbishing works as a market at all.
- Should I upgrade RAM and SSD or buy a new laptop?
- Run the order: does memory pressure actually show under your workload? Is the drive mechanical? Would the ceiling after both changes fit your work? Yes-yes-yes is the classic upgrade case at a fraction of replacement cost. A no on the last question is the replacement case, and no upgrade spend will change it.
