Why has my laptop gotten slower over time?
Laptops do get slower with age, but the silicon is not what ages. Four real things change: dust chokes the cooling, the software load grows, the drive fills and wears, and each OS version asks a little more.
All four are checkable, three are cheaply reversible, and the one that is not, rising software demands, is at least measurable, so you can decide about replacement with numbers.

The machine gets hot faster than it used to and slows under loads it once held. Measured, the curve that used to be flat now slides. Three summers of dust does this to almost every laptop.
The fix
A cooling service: vents and fan cleaned, thermal paste renewed. An hour of work, modest money at any repair shop, and the most performance-per-rupee any old laptop can buy. Measure before and after and the recovery is visible.
2. Software accumulated: startup items, agents, sync clients

Compare the startup list with what you actually use. Years of installs leave a tax of updaters and helpers, each small, together a constant load the machine did not carry in year one.
The fix
Prune the startup list ruthlessly, uninstall what you have not opened in six months. This is the honest version of the 'like new' feeling a reinstall gives.
3. The drive filled up, and if mechanical, also aged

Free space under 15%, or a mechanical drive now five-plus years old. SSDs slow subtly when very full; HDDs also degrade physically with age.
The fix
Free space first. On a machine still worth keeping, replacing an HDD with an SSD remains the single largest single-component speed-up available.
4. The software world moved: OS and apps ask more than they did

Everything is running correctly, nothing misbehaves, and the machine is simply working harder to stand still. Browsers and OS releases genuinely weigh more each year.
The fix
There is no fix, only management and an honest decision. Lighter apps buy time. When the measured ceiling no longer fits the work, that is what replacement is for, and the measurement is what tells you, rather than a vague feeling.
5. The battery aged, and on battery the machine caps itself

The gap between plugged-in speed and battery speed grew over the years. Aged cells deliver less current; some machines slow themselves accordingly when unplugged.
The fix
Check the battery's cycle count and health. A battery replacement restores unplugged speed on machines that cap it, and is far cheaper than a new laptop bought for the same symptom.
Measure it instead of guessing
This is the question the before-and-after run exists for. Measure the machine, service the cooling, measure again: the gap between the two curves is exactly what age had taken and cleaning gave back. If the second curve still is not enough for the work, replacement is a decision made with evidence.
What software cannot tell you here
- Drive wear and SMART health are invisible to a web page, the drive maker's utility reads them.
- Battery cycle count comes from the OS's own battery report, not from a browser.

- The processor does not age in any way you can feel, a chip runs the same code at the same speed for decades. What changes is everything around it: cooling efficiency, software weight, drive condition. That distinction matters because three of those four are fixable.
