Most student machines are second-hand, inherited, or the cheapest one that met the department's list. None of that tells you whether it will still be responsive at 2am with a render running. Three and a half minutes, no install, works on a machine you are not the administrator of.

01Flat and modest
A slow machine that stays slow is genuinely fine for writing, reading and the web. Do not be talked into replacing it for those.
02Fast, then a long slide
The one that catches people out. It feels quick in the shop and in the first ten minutes of an exam, then falls away exactly when the deadline is closest.
03Much worse on battery
Normal, but worth knowing before you plan to work through a lecture unplugged. Find a socket for the heavy work.

Where a browser stops
What it cannot tell you.
- It cannot tell you whether a specific piece of course software will run. Check the department's requirements for that; this tells you how the machine behaves under load, not what it is licensed for.
- No battery life estimate. A browser sees roughly how full a battery is and nothing about how long it will last.
- No storage speed and no storage health, both of which matter on an old machine and neither of which a web page can see.
Which run
Standard, 3 minutes.
The standard run answers the question for most coursework in about 3½ minutes. If the course involves rendering or CAD, the deep run is the one that tells you about the long jobs.
Both kinds are free. The choice is on the set-up screen.

- Can I run this on a university-managed laptop?
- Usually yes, because there is nothing to install. It runs in the browser tab, which is why it works on machines where you are not an administrator and cannot approve software.
- Is a second-hand laptop a bad idea?
- Not at all, and the test exists partly to make second-hand buying safer. A used machine that holds its performance is often better value than a new budget one that does not. Test before the return window closes.
- The result looks bad. Do I need a new laptop?
- Check the shape first. A steady slide is very often dust and old thermal paste on a machine that has had three years of student life, and cleaning it costs almost nothing compared with replacing it.
