How long should a laptop last?

Mechanically, a decent laptop runs seven to ten years. Most are replaced at four to six, for capability rather than failure. The gap between those numbers is where maintenance lives: one battery, one cooling service, and one storage upgrade can move a machine from the lower figure to the upper one for a fraction of replacement cost.

What fades, in order of schedule: cooling within two years without service, battery capacity at two to four years, mechanical drives and fans as moving parts, and finally the software floor rising underneath everything. The processor and memory essentially do not wear at all.
