Should I stress test my GPU?

Yes, in four situations: a new or second-hand graphics card, a laptop still inside its return window, after changing a driver, overclock or undervolt, and when games get slower the longer you play. In each of those a sustained load answers a question a quick benchmark cannot.

If the machine is new to you, stable, and games run the way you expect, there is little to learn. A stress test finds faults and limits; it does not make a healthy card any faster, and running one weekly for reassurance only adds heat.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

A problem in the first seconds of load (a crash, artefacts, a black screen) is usually a driver, an unstable overclock, or a power problem, and a short test is enough to show it.

Only after minutes of use

A problem that builds over minutes (frame rate fading, fans climbing, stutter arriving late) is heat or a power limit, and only a sustained test of several minutes will reproduce it.

The fix

Run a sustained test inside the return window and watch whether the frame rate holds or fades. A card that holds is fine regardless of its past; one that fades early is worth a closer look or a return.

2. You changed a driver, an overclock or an undervolt

The fix

Test before you trust it with a long gaming session. Tuning that only fails after twenty minutes will crash a game at the worst moment instead.

The fix

A sustained test separates heat from the game itself. If the test fades the same way, look at cooling and airflow before blaming the game or the settings.

Skip it. Test when something changes, not on a schedule.

Measure it instead of guessing

SystemCheck's GPU stage draws one fixed scene at 1600 by 900 and times every frame until the graphics chip has finished it, then reports frame rate, how steadily frames arrived, and how far the rate fell. What software cannot tell you here

  • The card's temperature, fan speed or power draw. No browser exposes them, so heat shows only as frame rate lost over time.
  • Whether artefacts are appearing. The test measures timing, not the picture, so watch the screen yourself during a heavy game.

Yes, once, inside the return window. It is the cheapest time to discover a bad cooler mount or a card that cannot hold its speed, because you can still send it back.
How often should I stress test my graphics card?
