How long should I stress test my GPU?

Around five minutes shows whether a graphics card is throttling, because a card has more metal to heat than a processor and takes longer to reach its limit. Ten to fifteen minutes shows where it settles once the whole machine is warm, which is what a long gaming session feels like.

Thirty minutes or more is for stability, not speed: validating an overclock or an undervolt, or chasing a crash that only appears late. The frame rate on most cards is flat well before then, so extra time adds certainty about crashes rather than new information about performance.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

The first minute flatters every card. Nothing is warm yet, the fans have not caught up, and many laptops run a short power boost that they cannot sustain.

Only after minutes of use

Between about three and fifteen minutes the card and the chassis reach their working temperature and the frame rate settles. That settled rate is the number worth knowing.

Run a sustained load for about five minutes and compare the rate in the first minute with the last. A fall of more than the run's own noise is the answer.

The fix

Run long enough for the whole machine to warm, including the processor if the game uses it. A combined CPU and GPU load reaches that state faster than a graphics-only test.

The fix

Treat any crash, driver reset or artefact as a failure. Add a real game session afterwards, because synthetic loads and games stress a card differently.

Why a GPU needs longer than a CPU

A processor die is small and reaches its temperature limit within seconds of heavy load. A graphics card carries a larger cooler with more thermal mass, so it keeps its opening speed longer, and on a laptop it often shares one heatsink with the processor, so its limit can depend on what the processor is doing too.

That is why a short graphics test can look perfect on a machine that clearly slows down in games: the test ended before the heat arrived.

Measure it instead of guessing

A standard SystemCheck run gives the GPU stage 50 seconds at a fixed 1600 by 900, which is enough to catch a card that throttles early. A Deep run loops that stage three times, then loads the CPU and GPU together, then runs soft shadows and path tracing, so by the end the graphics card has been under load for several minutes on a warm machine.

What software cannot tell you here

  • The card's temperature at any moment. The test infers heat from lost frame rate and says so.
  • Whether tuning is stable over hours. That needs a long native test and real games.

Why does my GPU score drop after a few minutes?
Usually heat or a power limit: the card starts fast while cool, then settles lower once its cooler reaches steady state. A drop that stops and holds is normal; one that keeps falling points at cooling.
Should I stress test the CPU and GPU at the same time?
