How do I read laptop processor names?
Read the letters, not just the digits. Laptop chip names encode a power class, and that class predicts sustained performance far better than the model number does. A low-power chip and a high-power chip from the same family can differ enormously while their names look almost identical.
The pattern holds across makers: there is a low-power line built for battery life and thin machines, a mainstream line, and a high-power line for gaming and workstation laptops. Identify which line a chip belongs to first, and only then compare numbers within it.

2. Generation, which matters less than people assume

The fix
Compare across classes before comparing across generations. This is where most buyers lose value, by paying for a newer number in a slower class.

The fix
Use the tier only as a rough sort within one maker and one class. Comparing a tier number across brands means nothing.
4. The same chip configured differently

The fix
Find the configured wattage in a review. This is the number that the name is standing in for, and it is the one that actually predicts performance.
5. Apple's simpler but still layered naming

The fix
Read the variant and the memory bandwidth. On Apple Silicon those two figures explain nearly all the performance difference between machines.
6. Core counts that are not comparable

Modern chips mix performance cores and efficiency cores, so a total core count can mislead badly when comparing two chips.
The fix
Compare performance cores separately from efficiency cores. A chip with fewer, stronger cores often finishes real work sooner.
Measure it instead of guessing
Whatever the name says, a sustained run says what the machine does. That matters most here because the name describes a chip while the machine is a chip inside a specific chassis with a specific cooling system, and two laptops with the same name routinely deliver different sustained figures.
What software cannot tell you here

- Is an i7 always better than an i5?
- No, and this is the most common naming mistake. A high-power chip from a lower tier frequently outperforms a low-power chip from a higher tier under sustained load, because the power class matters more than the tier. Compare within a class first, then across tiers.
- Does a newer processor generation mean a faster laptop?
- Usually a little, occasionally a lot when an architecture changes, and often less than the price difference implies. A previous-generation chip in a higher power class, in a machine with better cooling, will frequently beat a newer chip in a thinner laptop.
- What is the difference between U, H and HX processors?
- They are power classes. The low-power line targets thin machines and long battery life, the mainstream line sits in general-purpose laptops, and the high-power line goes in gaming and workstation machines with the cooling to support it.
