How do I check my laptop's specifications?
On Windows, press the Windows key and type About to open the system page, which lists the processor, memory and edition. On a Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Both take under a minute and both leave out the details that matter most.
The hidden details are the ones worth chasing: whether memory is in one channel or two, whether storage is NVMe or older, the configured wattage of the graphics chip, and the battery's real health against its design capacity.

The fix
Note the exact processor model rather than the family name, since the suffix usually indicates the power class and that matters more than the number.
2. Memory channels, which spec sheets omit

Task Manager's Performance tab shows the number of memory slots in use on Windows. One 16GB module performs measurably worse than two 8GB modules.
The fix
If a slot is free and the machine is upgradeable, adding a matching module for dual-channel operation is one of the cheapest real performance gains available.
3. Storage type and health

Check whether the drive is NVMe, older SATA, or mechanical. A drive tool also reports power-on hours and health attributes.
The fix
On a machine still using a mechanical drive, replacing it changes the experience more than any other upgrade. Power-on hours also reveal a supposedly lightly used second-hand machine.
4. Graphics: which chips and which one is in use

Task Manager's Performance tab lists every graphics adapter, and the graphics control panel shows which applications use which. Most laptops have two.

Knowing you have both explains a great deal, including why a game may be running on the wrong one and performing far below expectations.
5. Battery health, which never appears in specifications

The fix
Compare current capacity against design capacity. This one number explains most complaints about runtime and is the first thing to check on any used machine.
6. The figures that are not published at all

Reviews that measure them, or a sustained test on your own machine. This is precisely the gap this site exists to fill.
Measure it instead of guessing
The specification panel tells you what the machine is, and a sustained run tells you what it does. Those are genuinely different questions: two machines with identical listings can differ by a third under load, and only one of the two answers appears anywhere in the operating system.
