Is 8GB of RAM enough for a laptop in 2026?
For one application at a time and light browsing, 8GB still works. For the way most people actually use a laptop, with a browser full of tabs alongside a communication app and something else, it is no longer enough, and the machine spends its time moving memory to disk instead of working.
The decisive detail is that memory is soldered on nearly every modern laptop, so this is a permanent decision made at purchase. That asymmetry is why 16GB is the sensible floor even for people who might get by on 8.

Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test and note the result. A healthy sustained curve on a machine that stutters in daily use is the clearest possible evidence that memory rather than the processor is your constraint, and it redirects money from a new laptop to more memory, or to fewer tabs.

- For the overwhelming majority of use, yes, comfortably. The workloads that genuinely need more are virtual machines, large creative projects, local AI models and heavy development. If none of those describe you, 16GB is the right amount rather than a compromise.
- Can I upgrade the RAM in my laptop?
