What do different laptop fan noises mean?
The character of the sound is the diagnosis. A smooth airy rush that rises and falls with the workload is normal airflow. Grinding or rumbling is a worn bearing. Regular clicking or ticking is something touching the blades. A thin electrical whine that tracks the workload rather than the fan is not the fan at all.
Only the first of those is healthy, and only the last requires no repair. The middle two are mechanical and get worse.

Nothing. This is a cooling system working, and it is the sound every laptop with a fan is supposed to make.
2. Grinding or rumbling: a worn bearing

The fix
Replace the fan. Bearings do not recover, the noise worsens, and a fan is among the cheapest parts in the machine. Left alone it eventually seizes, which turns a noise problem into a heat problem.
3. Clicking or ticking: something touching the blades

A regular, rhythmic tick whose rate changes with fan speed. Often a cable, a sticker, or debris that has found its way into the fan housing.
The fix
Have it opened and cleared. This is usually a two-minute fix and it prevents damage to the blades if left.
4. Rattling: a loose component

The fix
A service inspection. Something is loose inside, and finding out what before it moves further is worthwhile.
5. A thin high whine that tracks the work, not the fan

The pitch changes when you scroll or open a window rather than when the fan speeds up, and it is often loudest at very high frame rates.
The fix
That is coil whine, which is electrical rather than mechanical and harmless. Capping frame rates usually reduces it.
6. A single loud buzz at startup, then silence

A brief buzz as the machine powers on, after which the fan never runs and the machine gets hot.
The fix
That is a fan attempting to start and failing. Treat it as urgent, because everything else in the machine is now cooling passively by accident rather than by design.
Measure it instead of guessing
Use the test as a controlled way to make the fan run at a known workload, then listen through it. A noise that stays constant while the load rises and falls is not airflow, and a machine that also slides in the curve has a cooling problem behind the noise rather than beside it.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot hear your machine, and no measurement distinguishes a bearing from an obstruction.
