How often should I clean my laptop fan?
Once a year suits most machines in ordinary homes. Every six months suits machines that live with pets, in dusty or smoky rooms, in hot climates, or on beds and sofas. Gaming laptops under heavy use sit at the shorter end too.
Better than any interval is the symptom: when the fan is louder for the same work than it used to be, and the machine settles lower under load than it did, that is the machine asking to be cleaned regardless of the date.

The fix
Hold the fan still while you clean it, blow outward through the exhaust, use short bursts, and keep the can upright. Where you can open the machine safely, removing the dust bluntly is better than moving it around.

External cleaning at the vents at home, and a service clean at the longer interval. Forcing a machine open is a false economy.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test before and after, and keep both results. That before-and-after is the only honest way to know whether the clean bought anything, and on a genuinely dusty machine the improvement in the settled level is usually larger than people expect.
