How do I maintain my laptop to keep it fast?
Five things, in order of how much they return: keep the vents clear and the machine on hard surfaces, clean the cooling system once a year, keep at least fifteen percent of the drive free, use a charge limit if the machine lives on a desk, and measure once a year so you can tell decline from imagination.
That last one is what makes the others meaningful. Laptop decline is gradual enough to be invisible month to month, so a saved yearly result is the only way to know whether maintenance worked or whether the machine has genuinely aged.
First, notice when it happens
The causes, ranked
1. Airflow, which costs nothing
most commonHow to confirm it
Hard surfaces, clear vents, space behind the hinge, and never working on a duvet for hours.
The fix
The cheapest habit with the largest cumulative effect, because every degree of avoided heat is heat that was not ageing the battery or the cooling system.
2. A yearly cooling clean
most commonHow to confirm it
Once a year in a clean room, every six months with pets, smoke, dust or a hot climate, and shorter again for heavily used gaming machines.
The fix
Clean carefully, holding the fan still. This is the maintenance that most directly protects sustained performance.
3. Storage headroom
commonHow to confirm it
Free space below ten percent slows a machine noticeably, because both the operating system and swapping need room to work.
The fix
Keep fifteen percent free as a standing rule. It is the least interesting item here and one of the most effective.
4. Battery habits
commonHow to confirm it
A machine that lives plugged in at 100 percent, warm, ages its battery fastest.
The fix
Turn on the charge limit at 60 or 80 percent for desk use, and turn it off before travel. One setting, years of benefit.
5. Software accumulation
commonHow to confirm it
Startup items and background extensions collect over years, particularly on machines migrated from older ones.
The fix
Review startup items once a year, at the same time as the clean. Ten minutes recovers most of what people mistake for hardware ageing.
6. Repaste, when measurement says so
occasionalHow to confirm it
Around year three to five on a machine that runs hot and settles low after a clean, and never on a machine still under warranty.
The fix
Measure, clean, measure again, and only then consider repasting. Doing it in that order tells you what each step was worth.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the deep test once a year, on the same day you clean the machine, and keep the results together. Three or four annual curves turn a vague sense that the laptop is getting old into a clear picture of whether it is declining, and whether the hour you spent cleaning it bought anything back.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot see dust, storage or battery health; a torch at the vents and the operating system's own reports cover all three.
- We cannot remind you annually, which a calendar entry beside the saved result does well.
Asked, in people’s own words
- How often should I clean my laptop?
- Once a year in a clean, cool room, and every six months with pets, carpets, smoke, hot climates, or habitual use on beds and sofas. Heavily used gaming laptops sit at the shorter end. The better trigger than any calendar is the machine becoming louder for the same work than it used to be.
- Does laptop maintenance actually make a difference?
- To sustained performance and to lifespan, considerably. A clean, well-ventilated machine with a charge limit holds more of its performance and keeps a usable battery years longer than an identical machine that has never been opened. Where it changes little is burst speed, which is why the benefit is easy to miss without measuring.
- What is the most important laptop maintenance task?
- Airflow, because it costs nothing and applies every day. After that, the yearly clean, since dust silently narrows the margin that decides how much performance the machine keeps under load. Everything else on the list is worth doing and returns less than those two.
