How do I prove my laptop is in good condition when selling it?

Buyers pay less when they cannot verify anything, so every claim you can evidence is money. Three pieces of evidence do most of the work: the battery health figure from the operating system's own report, a sustained performance result showing the machine holds up under load, and honest photographs including the states sellers usually avoid.

This also protects you. A documented condition at the point of sale is what prevents a dispute two weeks later about a fault that was never there.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

Specifications, battery health and cosmetic condition are all documentable in about fifteen minutes, before the listing goes up.

Only after minutes of use

The sustained result takes a few minutes more and is the one piece of evidence competing listings will not have.

The causes, ranked

1. Battery health, the first thing buyers ask

most common

How to confirm it

Generate the battery report on Windows, or read cycle count and condition in System Report on a Mac.

The fix

Put the number in the listing. A stated battery health figure removes the single largest uncertainty in a used laptop sale, even when the number is mediocre.

2. Nothing to show that it performs

most common

How to confirm it

Every listing claims the machine runs perfectly, so the claim carries no weight at all.

The fix

Include a sustained test result. It shows the machine holds its speed under load, which is exactly what a buyer cannot check from a photograph and what a ten-minute demo cannot prove.

3. Photographs that avoid the awkward states

common

How to confirm it

Screens photographed only on busy images, and cases photographed only from favourable angles.

The fix

Photograph the screen on full white and full black, and photograph every scuff. Buyers trust a seller who shows the flaws and discount one who does not.

4. Not proving the machine is legally transferable

common

How to confirm it

A machine still signed in, still enrolled in management, or still carrying a firmware password is worth nothing to a careful buyer.

The fix

Sign out fully, disable device tracking, remove management profiles, and reset before listing. Say in the listing that you have done it.

5. Vague specifications

common

How to confirm it

A listing that names a processor family and no configuration invites the buyer to assume the worst.

The fix

Screenshot the system information panel: processor, memory, storage. Specific listings sell faster and higher.

6. Hiding a known fault

occasional

How to confirm it

A tired battery, a loud fan or a mark on the screen, left out in the hope it goes unnoticed.

The fix

Disclose and price accordingly. Buyers forgive a known flaw and never forgive a hidden one, and platform disputes almost always favour the buyer.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the deep test and include the result in the listing. It is the one thing a buyer genuinely cannot verify from photographs or a brief meeting, and offering it unprompted signals a seller with nothing to hide, which is worth more than the number itself.

What software cannot tell you here

  • We cannot value your machine, which comparable completed listings do far better than any specification.
  • We cannot check cosmetic condition or that you have signed out properly, both of which are yours to document.

Asked, in people’s own words

How do I prove a laptop battery is good when selling?
Use the operating system's own report: the Windows battery report shows design capacity against current capacity, and macOS System Report shows cycle count and condition. A screenshot of either is far more persuasive than the words good battery life, and it works even when the figure is unremarkable.
What should I do before selling my laptop?
Back up, sign out of every account, disable device tracking, remove any management profile, then erase and reinstall the operating system. After that, document the specifications, the battery health and a performance result, and photograph the machine honestly including the screen on white and black.
Does testing a laptop help it sell for more?
It helps it sell faster and with fewer questions, because it removes the uncertainty buyers price in when they cannot verify a claim. In a market where every listing says the machine runs perfectly, the seller who shows evidence is the one who is believed.
