Why do video calls lag on my laptop?

Call lag hides a two-suspect problem: the network (erratic, anytime, both directions garbled) and the machine (punctual, minutes into every long call, your outgoing feed degrading first). Everyone blames the internet; the machine's version is the one this page fixes.

Why do my calls lag only in the afternoon?
Two candidates with one alibi each: afternoon network congestion (test at the router) and afternoon heat (the machine story, especially in warm rooms and summer). The split test: a wired call in the cool of the room; if it still degrades on schedule, the machine is your suspect.
Why do others say I am frozen while they look fine to me?
Asymmetry points at your outgoing path: your upload or your machine's encoder. If your view of them is smooth, your download and their setups are fine; the freeze they see is made on your side, by bandwidth or by a settling encoder.
