Why is my laptop fast at first, then slow?

A machine that starts fast and slows after minutes is hitting a limit: almost always heat, sometimes a power budget. The speed you see at first is real; so is the lower speed it settles to. The question is only which limit, because the fixes differ.

Heat limits are fixable with cleaning and airflow. Power limits are design decisions that a setting sometimes moves. A sustained measurement tells them apart by the shape of the decline.

The decline is gradual, a slide, steeper the longer the load runs, worse in warm rooms and on soft surfaces. Fans loud. Recovery after a rest, then the same slide again.

The fix

Clear intakes and exhausts, hard surface under the machine, and a cooling service if it is over two years old. Each moves the throttle point later and the settled level higher: measurably.

2. The boost window closed: a power budget, not a fault

The decline is a step, not a slide: full speed for a fixed number of seconds, then a clean drop to a level it then holds indefinitely. Same pattern hot or cold, clean or dusty. This is the processor's configured boost expiring, exactly as designed.

The fix

Nothing is broken, so nothing needs fixing, but performance profiles ('performance' vs 'balanced' in the OS or the maker's app) move the budget, and on desktops a BIOS power-limit setting moves it further. The settled level after the step is the machine's honest sustained speed.

The pattern appears unplugged and vanishes on mains. Most laptops run a lower power limit on battery on purpose.

The fix

Plug in for heavy work, or raise the battery performance profile knowing it costs runtime. This is policy, not damage.

The 'slowdown' arrives at a consistent time after login rather than a consistent time under load, indexing, sync or scans starting a few minutes after boot. Task Manager at the moment of slowdown shows the arrival.

The fix

Retime or remove the task. This impostor is worth ruling out because it mimics a thermal pattern while having nothing to do with heat.

First run of the day is fine; every later run slows sooner. The machine (or the room) is starting each session warmer than the last.

The fix

Airflow around, not just under, the machine; a break between heavy sessions; in hot climates, the cool hours are genuinely the fast hours, measurably so.

Why this pattern is good news

Of all the slowness complaints, this one carries the most information. A machine that is slow always could be anything. A machine that is fast then slow has told you it reaches a limit, and limits can be identified by shape, moved by maintenance, and priced for repair. It has also told you the hardware is capable of the fast speed: the ceiling is real and something is stealing the sustain, which is a far better position than a low ceiling.

Measure it instead of guessing

This exact pattern is what a sustained-load curve exists to draw. Forty-five seconds to three minutes of full load, throughput sampled continuously: a slide names heat, a clean step names a power budget, and the settled percentage is the number to compare before and after any fix. Is thermal throttling damaging my laptop?
No, throttling is the protection working. The machine slows precisely so it does not damage itself. The cost is performance, not hardware life. Sustained running at the throttle point does age fans and batteries faster, which is one more reason cooling maintenance pays.
How do I know if it's heat or a power limit?
