Is undervolting my graphics card safe?

Yes. Undervolting runs the card at a lower voltage for the same speed, which reduces power draw and heat, and less voltage cannot damage a chip. The worst outcome of going too far is instability: a crash or driver reset, which is fixed by raising the voltage a step.

The gain is often real: many cards hold the same frame rate at noticeably lower power, run cooler and quieter, and throttle less on a laptop or in a small case. The work is in testing each step properly so a setting that looks fine does not crash a game an hour later.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

A crash or artefacts within seconds of load means the voltage is too low for that frequency. Raise it before testing further.

Only after minutes of use

A crash only after long sessions means the setting is marginal. It passed a short test but not sustained heat; step the voltage up slightly and retest for longer.

Measure it instead of guessing

Test an undervolt with the same fixed workload before and after the change. Does undervolting a GPU reduce performance?
Not when done correctly: the card runs the same frequency at lower voltage. It can even increase sustained performance on a thermally limited card, because it throttles less.
Can undervolting damage a graphics card?

Is undervolting better than lowering the power limit?
