Why is my PC so slow right after it starts?

There are two separate problems hiding in this question. If the wait is before the login screen, the cause is in the boot itself: firmware settings, the drive the system starts from, or a pending update. If the login is quick but the machine crawls for the first few minutes afterwards, the cause is everything that launches at once when you sign in.

The second is far more common, and the fix is usually free: open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable the programs you do not need running the moment Windows starts. Each one you remove gives the machine a faster first few minutes.

First, notice when it happens

A long wait before the login screen appears is a boot problem: a hard drive rather than an SSD as the system drive, a firmware setting such as a slow device check, a pending update finishing, or a drive that is struggling.

Only after minutes of use

A quick login followed by several sluggish minutes that then clear up on their own is the startup load: apps launching, sync clients catching up, updates checking in, and security software scanning. If it never clears, the problem is not startup at all.

Task Manager's Startup tab lists many enabled entries, several with a high startup impact. Chat apps, game launchers, updaters and cloud storage clients are the usual crowd.

The fix

Disable everything in the Startup tab you do not need immediately at login. Nothing is uninstalled, and any of them can still be opened by hand. This is the single most effective startup fix.

Disk and CPU usage run high for the first five to ten minutes, led by OneDrive or another sync client, Windows Update, or your antivirus, then settle without you doing anything.

The fix

Let it finish, or reduce it: pause sync for large folders you rarely use, and schedule scans for a time the machine is on but idle. Keeping the PC in sleep rather than shutting it down skips most of this.

3. The system drive is a hard disk rather than an SSD

Task Manager's Performance tab lists the system drive as HDD, and disk usage sits at or near 100 percent for minutes after every boot.

The fix

Moving Windows to a solid-state drive is the largest single startup improvement available, often turning minutes into seconds. On most desktops and many laptops it is an inexpensive upgrade.

The delay is before Windows loads, with a long pause on the maker's logo. Firmware may be checking every device or trying network boot first.

The fix

In the firmware setup, enable fast boot and put the system drive first in the boot order. In Windows, try toggling Fast Startup in the power options, as it helps some machines and slows others.

Memory usage is near its limit shortly after signing in, and disk activity stays high because the system is paging to the drive.

The fix

Cut the startup list first, since that frees memory for nothing. If the machine is at its limit even after that, more memory is a genuine upgrade rather than a guess.

6. A drive that is starting to fail

Boot times have grown steadily worse, with long freezes, error checks at startup, or health warnings from the drive maker's tool.

The fix

Back up your files immediately, then check the drive's health data and plan a replacement. Do not wait for boot to stop working.

Measure it instead of guessing

Startup speed is mostly about the drive and background software, which a browser cannot see. Where a SystemCheck run helps is the other half: once the machine has settled, the CPU and memory stages show whether it performs normally. A PC that boots slowly but measures healthy afterwards has a startup problem, not a hardware one.

  • Whether your system drive is an SSD or a hard disk, or how healthy it is. Storage is not measured and drive health is not readable from a web page.

How do I make my PC start up faster?

Why is my computer slow for the first few minutes after turning it on?

Should I turn off Fast Startup?
