Why is my PC slow with 100 percent disk usage?

Disk usage at 100 percent means the drive is the part everything else is waiting for. On a hard disk that is easy to reach: Windows Update, the search indexer, a cloud sync client, an antivirus scan, or a browser restoring its session can each hold the drive at its limit for minutes. On an SSD, 100 percent usage that lasts is rarer and points at paging from full memory, a nearly full drive, or a drive with a fault.

Sort Task Manager by Disk and look at the top process. If it is a recognisable task, let it finish or reschedule it. If the drive shows 100 percent with almost nothing being read or written, the drive itself is struggling, and that is the case to take seriously.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

100 percent from login, easing after ten or fifteen minutes, is the startup load: updates, indexing, sync and scans all hitting the drive at once. It is worst on a hard disk and usually harmless.

Only after minutes of use

100 percent that appears after the machine has been running a while, and grows with the number of programs open, is paging from full memory. 100 percent at random moments with long freezes, regardless of what is open, is a drive problem.

The top of Task Manager's Disk column is Windows Update, the search indexer, OneDrive or another sync client, or your antivirus, and it drops back once they finish.

The fix

Let it finish with the PC on and idle. If it recurs daily, change the scan or sync schedule to a time you are not using the machine.

2. The system drive is a hard disk

Task Manager's Performance tab lists the drive as HDD. Everything above happens on an SSD too, but an SSD finishes it in seconds rather than minutes.

The fix

Move Windows to an SSD. It is the one change that removes this problem rather than managing it, and on most desktops it costs less than an hour and a modest amount of money.

3. Memory is full and the system is paging

Memory usage is above about 85 percent at the same time as disk usage is at 100 percent, and closing programs relieves both.

The fix

Close what you are not using and trim startup programs. If your normal workload fills memory by itself, add memory.

4. The drive is nearly full

The system drive shows under 10 percent free. An SSD with almost no free space slows down sharply, because it has nowhere to write without erasing first.

The fix

Free space to at least 15 to 20 percent with Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup, and move large media to another drive.

The problem began after an update, or the drive is a hard disk that spins down and takes seconds to respond after each pause.

The fix

Install the storage and chipset drivers from the board maker's site, and in the power plan's advanced settings stop the hard disk from turning off after a few minutes.

6. A failing drive

Disk usage sits at 100 percent while the read and write speeds shown beside it are tiny, freezes last many seconds, a hard disk clicks, or the drive maker's health tool shows reallocated sectors or a warning.

The fix

Back up your files first, before anything else. Then replace the drive. A drive that is spending its time retrying bad sectors does not recover.

Measure it instead of guessing

Storage is the one part of the machine a browser cannot measure, so a SystemCheck run answers this question by elimination. If the CPU and memory stages show a processor holding its speed and memory bandwidth in the normal range, the machine's slowness lives on the drive, and the fixes above are the right ones. If the processor is also struggling, there is more than one problem, and the drive is only part of it.
