Why is my laptop slower when connected to a dock?

Because a dock is not a passive box. It drives displays, moves network and storage traffic, and supplies power, all through one connection with a fixed bandwidth budget, and it usually forces the discrete graphics chip to stay awake all day.

Add the thermal cost of clamshell operation and the common problem of a dock that supplies less power than the laptop wants, and a machine that is quick at home becomes noticeably slower at the desk.

Compare performance on the dock against the machine's own charger. Many docks supply less than a laptop's full requirement, especially with several devices attached.

The fix

Check the dock's power rating against the laptop's charger. Where it falls short, use the original charger alongside the dock for heavy work.

2. Clamshell operation with no airflow

Lid closed, machine flat on a desk, often with something on top of it. The body cannot shed heat, and on fanless machines the body was the cooling system.

The fix

A vertical or elevated stand that leaves air on all sides, or work with the lid open as a third display. This is the single biggest fix for docked thermal problems.

Connect that display directly to compare. A poor converter can cost more performance than the display itself is worth.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the test docked and again undocked on the machine's own charger. The gap between the two settled levels is the cost of your desk setup, and it separates a power delivery problem from a cooling one: cooling shows as a slide over minutes, while power shows as a lower level from the start.

Do docking stations slow down laptops?

Should I close my laptop when using a dock?
It is thermally the worst option, especially on thin and fanless machines whose case does the cooling. If you prefer a closed lid, use a stand that leaves air on all sides rather than laying the machine flat, and never stack anything on top of it.
Why is my laptop charging slowly on a dock?
Because the dock is splitting its power budget between charging and everything attached to it, and many docks are rated below the laptop's own charger to begin with. Under heavy load the machine can draw more than the dock supplies, which is why performance and charging both suffer at once.
