Why does my laptop battery drain when it is turned off?

Because it probably is not off. Closing the lid or choosing sleep leaves a modern laptop in a standby state that keeps parts of it awake for sync and notifications, and wake timers, network activity and connected devices can all bring it fully awake inside a bag.

A small loss over a week is normal for any lithium battery. Losing a third of the charge overnight is not, and it means the machine was working while you thought it was not.

A warm machine when you take it out of a bag is the strongest single clue: it was not asleep, it was working.

Only after minutes of use

Losing a few percent per day while genuinely shut down is ordinary self-discharge. Losing double figures overnight is a wake problem.

The fix

Use hibernate or a full shutdown before travel. On machines where standby behaves badly, hibernation is the reliable answer rather than a workaround.

2. Wake timers and network activity

Scheduled maintenance, updates and wake-on-network settings can bring the machine fully awake with the lid closed.

The fix

Disable wake timers on battery in the power settings, and turn off wake on network access if you do not use it.

3. Devices drawing power from the ports

A phone, mouse dongle or drive left connected, with the machine set to keep charging ports live while off.

The fix

Unplug before storing, or turn off the always-on charging setting in firmware if you do not use it.

4. Fast startup keeping a hibernation state

Windows fast startup means shutdown is not a full shutdown, which occasionally interacts badly with drivers and leaves things running.

The fix

Try a full shutdown with fast startup disabled and compare the overnight loss. It is a reversible test.

5. Firmware settings and updates

Update firmware, and check the machine's own power settings in firmware rather than only in the operating system.

The fix

Replace it. Storage drain is one of the less common ways wear shows itself, but it is a real one.

Measure it instead of guessing

This is a storage problem rather than a performance one, so a run tells you something adjacent but useful: whether the machine performs normally on battery under load. A machine that both drains in storage and collapses under load has a worn battery rather than a wake problem.

What software cannot tell you here

  • We cannot read sleep states or the sleep study report, which Windows generates from a single command.
  • We cannot see firmware settings, which live outside the operating system entirely.

How much battery should a laptop lose overnight?
A few percent at most in sleep, and close to nothing when hibernated or fully shut down. Losing ten or twenty percent overnight means the machine was awake for part of it, which the sleep report will confirm and which wake timers or modern standby usually explain.
Should I shut down or sleep my laptop?
Sleep for a lunch break, hibernate or shut down for a night in a bag. Hibernation writes memory to disk and uses no power, which is why it is the right choice before travel on machines where standby drains. It costs a few extra seconds when you return.
Why is my laptop hot in my bag?
Because it woke up. A machine in modern standby can be brought fully awake by a timer, a network event or a connected device, and inside a closed bag there is nowhere for that heat to go. That combination is bad for the battery as well as alarming to find.
