Problems · Slowness
Why is my laptop slow after a Windows update?
For the first hours after a Windows update, slowness is usually the update itself: indexing, optimisation and cleanup keep running after the restart, and they are heavy on disk and processor.
Give it two or three idle hours plugged in. Slowness that survives a day has a different cause, most often a driver the update replaced, or update work that is stuck rather than finishing.
First, notice when it happens
The causes, ranked
1. Post-update housekeeping is still running
most commonHow to confirm it
Task Manager shows processes like Windows Modules Installer Worker, service host or the indexer busy on disk and CPU. Settings → Windows Update says whether more of the update is still pending.
The fix
Leave the machine on and plugged in for a couple of idle hours. Interrupting this work by forcing restarts stretches it out over days instead.
2. The update replaced a driver with a worse one
commonHow to confirm it
Slowness or stutter that started exactly at the update and lives mostly in games, video playback or external monitors points at the graphics driver.
The fix
Install the current driver directly from Intel, NVIDIA or AMD rather than accepting the generic one the update supplied. For laptop-specific hardware, the maker's support page for your exact model is the right source.
3. The power plan or a firmware setting was reset
commonHow to confirm it
Check Settings → System → Power: updates sometimes land machines back on a balanced or efficiency profile, which caps sustained speed, especially on battery.
The fix
Set the profile back to what you use. If the machine has maker software (Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager and the like), check its performance mode too: updates can reset those independently.
4. The update is stuck rather than finishing
occasionalHow to confirm it
High disk or CPU from update processes persisting for days, or Windows Update showing the same pending item repeatedly failing.
The fix
Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, then install the pending item manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog if it keeps failing. Persistent failure of one KB is a known, searchable event: include the KB number when you search.
5. The update raised the baseline and the machine was already at its edge
occasionalHow to confirm it
An older machine, already tight on memory or drive space, that never quite recovered after a feature update rather than a monthly patch.
The fix
The fixes from the general slowness playbook apply double here: free the drive, trim startup, add RAM where possible. Feature updates do genuinely raise the floor; the machine did not imagine it.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test once now and once tomorrow. If tomorrow's settled level matches today's peak, the update work has passed and the machine is itself again. If both runs slide the same way, the slowness is not the update's queue, it is heat or a limit, and the report says which.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot see which KB installed or whether one is stuck: Windows Update's own history page is the record.
- A browser cannot roll back a driver or read which version you have; Device Manager holds both.
Asked, in people’s own words
- How long should a laptop be slow after an update?
- Hours, not days. The post-restart housekeeping is heaviest in the first hour and should be inaudible within a day of normal plugged-in use. Slowness on day three is a different problem wearing the update's clothes.
- Can I uninstall a Windows update that made my laptop slow?
- Monthly quality updates can be uninstalled from Settings → Windows Update → Update history, and that is a legitimate diagnostic step. But if the slowness is a driver, replacing the driver is more precise than removing a security patch: try that first.
- Why does my fan run loud after a Windows update?
- Same cause, different symptom: the post-update work loads the processor, the processor makes heat, the fan answers it. Loud fan plus busy disk right after an update is normal; a fan still constant days later deserves the checks above.
