Why is my laptop charging so slowly?
Slow charging is usually a supply problem rather than a battery problem: an undersized adapter, a cable that cannot carry the wattage, or the wrong USB-C port. Charging while working also halves the apparent rate, because the machine spends what the charger brings.
The other honest explanations are deliberate: charge-care limits that stop around eighty percent, and thermal pauses that slow charging when the battery is warm. Both are features protecting the cells, and neither is a fault.

The fix
Use the original or an equivalently rated adapter for real charging. Small chargers keep a working laptop alive without meaningfully filling it.
2. The cable or the port is the bottleneck

The fix
Use a cable rated for the charger's wattage and the port the maker designates for charging. This costs nothing and fixes a surprising share of complaints.
3. You are charging and working at once

Charging speed is whatever is left after the machine's own consumption: heavy work can consume nearly everything the adapter provides.
The fix
For a fast fill, let it idle or sleep. Nothing is wrong; the arithmetic is simply visible.
4. Charge limits and battery care, working as designed

The fix
Leave it on for desk-bound life; disable it the night before a travel day. It is preserving the battery, which is why the setting exists.
5. Heat pausing the charge

The fix
Charge when the machine is cooler and unblocked. This one is genuinely good behaviour on the machine's part.
6. A battery or charging circuit at the end

The fix
Replace the battery, and have the charging circuit checked if a new battery does not resolve it.
Measure it instead of guessing
The test is useful here for what it rules out: a machine that holds its performance while charging is not being throttled by a starved power path, and one that sags while charging is telling you the adapter cannot feed both jobs at once. That distinction saves buying a battery for a charger problem.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot read charging wattage: the adapter's label and the machine's own power readouts hold those numbers.
- Cable and adapter faults are found by substitution, which is faster than any diagnostic anyway.

- Typically one and a half to three hours from empty with the correct adapter, and deliberately slower in the last twenty percent. Substantially longer than that with the original charger, idle, suggests cable, port, heat or cells, in that order of likelihood.
- Does using a laptop while charging damage the battery?
- No: modern machines manage this properly, running from the adapter and charging with what is left. Heavy work while charging does generate more heat, and heat is the real ager, which is the honest reason to prefer cooler charging when convenient.
- Why does my laptop charge slower with a USB-C charger?
- Because USB-C is a family, not a standard wattage: the charger, the cable and the port negotiate, and the lowest of the three wins. Match all three to the machine's requirement, and prefer the port the maker marks for charging.
