Why is my laptop battery draining while plugged in?

A plugged-in laptop that still drains is doing arithmetic out loud: the machine is drawing more watts than the charger supplies, and the battery covers the difference. Under gaming or heavy work with a small adapter, that is the whole story: not a fault, a shortfall.

The confusions worth clearing first: USB-C chargers vary enormously in wattage and a phone charger keeps a working laptop alive in name only; and deliberate charge-limit settings (stop at 80%) are healthy features, not draining bugs.

First, notice when it happens

Measure it instead of guessing

The sustained test makes the wattage story visible on demand: run it plugged into the suspect charger and watch the percentage. Holding steady means supply covers even full load; sliding during the test quantifies the shortfall in the most honest way available without a wattmeter.
