How do I check my laptop's battery health?
On Windows: open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the HTML file it writes. On a Mac: hold Option, click the Apple menu, System Information, then Power. Both show the two numbers that matter: design capacity and current full-charge capacity.
Divide full-charge by design capacity: that is your battery's health. Above 80% is fine. Below 80%, the shortened day is chemical fact, and below 60% most makers call the battery ready for replacement.

The fix
Apple rates most modern MacBook batteries for about 1,000 cycles to 80%. Condition 'Service Recommended' is the machine's own verdict: believe it over any third-party app's percentage.
3. Reading the numbers: the thresholds that mean something

Judge on health percentage first and cycles second: a gently used battery can have high cycles and decent health, and a hot-lived battery the reverse.

The fix
Under 80% on a machine sold as refurbished is a fair negotiation point; under 60% is a return or a priced-in battery replacement, your choice, but make it knowingly.
Measure it instead of guessing
Battery health is one half of a used machine's truth; what it holds under load is the other. The same five minutes that reads the battery report can run the browser test too, the pair together is the closest thing a buyer has to a full physical.

- Above 80% of design capacity is healthy for any age of machine. 100% only exists in the first months. A two-year-old machine at 85% has been treated well; at 65% it has lived hot, deeply cycled, or both.
- Does powercfg battery report show cycle count?
- When the battery's firmware reports it, yes, in the Installed batteries section. Some batteries do not expose it, in which case the capacity history serves the same purpose: it shows wear as a trend rather than a count.
- How accurate are third-party battery apps?
- They read the same firmware values the OS reads, wrapped in a subscription. The built-in report is the same data from the source. Save the money.
- Should I calibrate my laptop battery?
- Modern batteries do not need ritual calibration; one full charge-drain-charge pass can resync a wildly wrong percentage display, but doing it routinely just spends cycles. If the gauge misbehaves persistently, that is a symptom worth a service, not a ritual.
