How can I make my laptop faster for gaming?

Work in order of payoff. Plug in with the full-wattage charger, set both the operating system and the maker's app to performance, make sure the game is rendering on the discrete graphics card and that the direct display path is enabled if the machine has one, then attend to cooling, then to in-game settings.

The first four cost nothing and frequently deliver more than any settings change. People usually start at the bottom of that list and wonder why the gains are small.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

The power path and graphics routing items change frame rates from the first minute, and their effect is constant rather than growing.

Only after minutes of use

Cooling changes show up after ten to fifteen minutes, in the part of the session where frames were fading. Both halves matter and they are different fixes.

The causes, ranked

1. Not plugged in, or on the wrong charger

How to confirm it

Compare frame rates plugged in against unplugged. Most gaming laptops lose a great deal of performance on battery, and a slim USB-C adapter cannot feed a gaming load.

The fix

The machine's own charger, in the wall, every session. This is the largest free gain available and the most commonly missed.

2. Performance profiles not enabled

The maker's app sitting in balanced or quiet, which caps wattage substantially on gaming machines.

The fix

Performance or turbo in the maker's app, and performance in Windows. Accept the fan noise; it is the sound of the wattage you paid for.

3. Rendering on the wrong graphics chip

Frame rates far below the machine's tier with no thermal explanation. Check the game's graphics preference and whether the machine offers a direct or discrete display mode.

The fix

Set the game to the discrete card, and enable the direct display path if available. The gain from this alone can be very large.

4. Thermal decline mid-session

Good frames for the first ten minutes, fading afterwards, with the fans at maximum. The shared heatsink means the processor and graphics card throttle each other.

The fix

Clear the vents, raise the rear, clean the machine, repaste if it is older. Every cooling fix pays double on a gaming laptop.

5. Settings that cost more than they show

Shadows, ray tracing, volumetric effects and high-resolution textures are the expensive ones, and several look nearly identical a notch lower.

The fix

Lower the expensive settings rather than everything, and use the upscaling technology your machine supports. This is where to look after the free items, not before them.

6. Background load and overlays

Recording software, launcher overlays, browser tabs and downloads all take resources the game wanted.

The fix

Close what you are not using and let shader compilation finish before judging a new title.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the deep test before and after each change and read the settled level. Frame counters vary by scene and are hard to compare between sessions, while a sustained curve on the same machine is directly comparable, so you can price each change instead of guessing at it.

What software cannot tell you here

  • We cannot see which graphics chip a game is using, or your display path setting; the graphics control panel and the maker's app own those.
  • We cannot measure frame rates in your games, only the machine's capacity to sustain load.

Why does my gaming laptop get low FPS?
Most often because it is on battery, in a balanced power profile, or rendering through the integrated graphics rather than the discrete card. Those three account for the majority of gaming laptops that seem to underperform their specification, and all three are free to fix.
Does closing background apps improve gaming performance?
Modestly, and most of all where memory is tight or a recording overlay is active. It is worth doing, but it is far down the list: the power path, the profile and the graphics routing each return more than closing a browser.
Will more RAM improve gaming performance?
Only if you are short of it, and then substantially. Going from 8GB to 16GB helps many modern games; going from 16GB to 32GB rarely changes frame rates at all. Check memory usage during a session before spending, because it is one of the few upgrades still possible on some gaming laptops.
