What are the best power settings for laptop performance?

Set the operating system to its performance mode and the maker's own application to its performance or turbo profile. Those are two independent settings on most Windows laptops, and having one at performance while the other sits on balanced is the most common reason a machine underperforms its specification.

Then plug in. Nearly every laptop reduces its power limits on battery, and on some machines the difference is larger than a whole hardware tier.
