Should I buy an external GPU for my laptop?

Sometimes, and less often than the idea deserves. An external graphics enclosure gives a thin laptop desktop-class graphics power that its own chassis could never cool, which is genuinely useful. It also costs a great deal, loses some performance to the connection, and only works at the desk.

The honest comparison is rarely eGPU against nothing. It is eGPU plus laptop against a desktop, and on price and performance the desktop usually wins by a wide margin.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the test on the laptop alone first and read the settled level. That is what your machine holds without help, and it tells you whether your problem is a graphics ceiling that an enclosure would lift, or a thermal and power limit that follows the laptop everywhere and would not improve at all.

Do eGPUs work with MacBooks?
