Does undervolting a laptop improve performance?
It can, substantially, on a thermally limited machine. Undervolting lowers the voltage the processor requests without lowering the speed you ask of it, so the chip produces less heat for the same work, reaches its thermal limit later, and holds a higher speed for longer.
It does nothing for a machine that is not thermally limited, it is not available on every platform, and an over-aggressive setting causes instability. Measure before, change one step at a time, and measure after.

Run the test: a curve that peaks and then slides is the profile that undervolting improves. A flat curve means the machine is limited by something else.
The fix
Undervolt in small steps, testing stability at each, and re-run the sustained test to price the gain. On a hot thin laptop the improvement can be worth more than any accessory.
2. Platform support, which is the first thing to check

Many recent Intel platforms block undervolting at the firmware level for security reasons, and Apple Silicon does not expose it at all. AMD platforms often offer their own tuning instead.

Check what your platform allows before investing time. Where it is blocked, the cooling ladder and power modes are the remaining levers.

Crashes, freezes or reboots under load after a change, often appearing only in specific workloads rather than immediately.
The fix
Back off to a milder setting and test for longer. An undervolt that seems fine for ten minutes and crashes after an hour is a bad undervolt.
4. Expecting it to replace cooling maintenance

A dusty machine improves more from a cleaning than from any tuning, and the two are not alternatives.

Clean first, then undervolt. Tuning a clogged cooling system is optimising around a problem you could have removed.

The fix
Re-check after updates, and keep a note of your settings. A saved before-and-after result makes it obvious when this has happened.
Measure it instead of guessing
This is the site's cleanest use case: run the sustained test before, apply one change, run it again, and compare the settled levels. The peak will barely move and the settled level is where the gain lives, so any evaluation based on a benchmark score alone will conclude that undervolting does nothing.
What software cannot tell you here

- Is undervolting safe for a laptop?
- Undervolting reduces voltage rather than raising it, so it does not stress components the way overclocking does. The real risk is instability: too aggressive a setting causes crashes and can lose unsaved work. Move in small steps, test each one under real load, and back off at the first sign of trouble.
- How much performance does undervolting gain?
- On a thermally limited thin laptop, sustained gains in the range of ten to twenty percent are commonly reported, and occasionally more. On a machine that is not thermally limited, close to nothing. The sustained test before and after is what tells you which machine you have.
- Why can I not undervolt my Intel laptop?
- Many recent Intel platforms disable voltage control at the firmware level following security mitigations, and laptop makers often lock it further. It is not something you can restore. Where it is unavailable, power modes and the cooling ladder are the levers that remain.
