Problems · Slowness
Why is my work laptop so slow?
Because it is doing more than a personal machine of the same specification. Endpoint security scanning every file, full-disk encryption, device management agents, monitoring software, VPN routing and scheduled compliance scans all run continuously, and each takes a share of the machine.
Most of that is not optional and not yours to remove, which changes the goal. The useful outcome here is not a faster machine but a clear, specific report to whoever supports it, because a vague complaint gets a vague answer.
First, notice when it happens
The causes, ranked
1. Endpoint security scanning everything
most commonHow to confirm it
The security agent near the top of the task viewer during file operations, builds, or large copies.
The fix
Ask IT about exclusions for legitimate working directories. Most policies allow some, and developers in particular often get build directories excluded once they ask.
2. Several agents doing overlapping work
most commonHow to confirm it
Management, inventory, monitoring, backup and security agents all installed, each modest and collectively significant.
The fix
This is IT's to weigh rather than yours to remove. A measurement showing the cumulative cost is what makes that conversation productive.
3. Full-disk encryption
commonHow to confirm it
Slower file operations across the board, most noticeable on older machines without hardware acceleration for it.
The fix
Not negotiable, and rightly so. On modern hardware the cost is small; on an old fleet machine it is one more reason the machine is due for replacement.
4. Everything routed through a VPN
commonHow to confirm it
Web and cloud applications slow while local work is fine, particularly when all traffic is forced through a distant gateway.
The fix
Report it as a network issue rather than a laptop issue. Split tunnelling and gateway choice are IT decisions, and the distinction matters for who can fix it.
5. Scheduled scans and patching at bad times
commonHow to confirm it
Predictable slowness at the same time each day or week, matching a scan or patch window.
The fix
Ask for the window to be moved, which is often easy. Many people endure this for years without mentioning it.
6. Fleet hardware kept past its useful life
commonHow to confirm it
8GB of memory and a small drive on a machine now carrying several agents, or a four-year-old laptop that has never been cleaned.
The fix
This is the case where a measurement matters most. A sustained result alongside the machine's age is the kind of evidence a refresh budget responds to.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test and save the result, because a work machine is the place where a number does something a complaint cannot. It separates a thermal problem, which is a maintenance issue, from a software load problem, which is a policy one, and IT can act on either when it is stated clearly.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot see which agents are installed or what policies apply, which the task viewer shows and your IT team can explain.
- We cannot change anything on a managed machine, and attempting to remove security software is usually both futile and against policy.
Asked, in people’s own words
- Why is my work laptop slower than my personal one?
- Because it runs software your personal machine does not: endpoint security inspecting every file, disk encryption, management and monitoring agents, and often a VPN carrying all traffic. The same hardware doing more work is slower, and most of that work is deliberate and not removable by you.
- Can I speed up a company laptop?
- Within limits. You can close what you are not using, ask for exclusions on working directories, ask for scan windows to be moved, and keep the machine cool and its vents clear. What you should not do is disable security software, which is both against policy in almost every organisation and ineffective as a long-term fix.
- How do I convince IT my laptop needs replacing?
- With evidence rather than frustration. A sustained performance result, the machine's age and specification, and a note of what you are waiting on daily make a far stronger case than saying it is slow. Fleet refresh decisions are budget decisions, and they respond to numbers.
