Problems · How to check
What should I test on a new laptop?
Spend thirty minutes in the first week rather than thirty seconds on the first day. Check the screen on full white and full black, exercise every port, read the battery report, then run a sustained load test and save the result.
The order matters because the first three are quick and the last one finds what nobody else checks: whether the machine holds its performance under load, which is precisely the fault that shows up in month three when returning is no longer an option.
First, notice when it happens
The causes, ranked
1. The screen, checked properly
most commonHow to confirm it
Full white finds dead and stuck pixels and dirt under the glass. Full black finds backlight bleed and uneven lighting. Most people never look at either.
The fix
Do both in a dark room. Screens are the most common thing people wish they had checked and one of the easiest to check.
2. Every port, with something plugged in
most commonHow to confirm it
Test each port with an actual device, including charging through each USB-C port that supports it, since ports fail individually.
The fix
Five minutes, and it catches a fault that is invisible until the day you need that port.
3. The battery report, on day one
commonHow to confirm it
A new machine should show capacity close to design capacity and a very low cycle count. Anything else suggests it is not new.
The fix
Read it immediately. An unexpectedly high cycle count on a supposedly new machine is grounds for a replacement, not a discussion.
4. Sustained performance, the check nobody does
commonHow to confirm it
Run a sustained load for ten to fifteen minutes and read the settled level against what the model normally holds.
The fix
This is the one fault that a shop demonstration and a week of light use will never reveal, and the return window is the only period in which it is easy to act on.
5. Keyboard, trackpad and hinge
commonHow to confirm it
Every key, including the ones you never use, plus trackpad gestures and clicks in every corner. Check the machine does not rock on a flat surface.
The fix
Quick and worth it, because a single dead key is an exchange on day five and a repair on day forty.
6. Noise, in a quiet room
occasionalHow to confirm it
Listen under load for coil whine, a rattling fan, or a fan that never starts. Compare against expectations for the model.
The fix
Coil whine in particular is rarely accepted as a warranty fault later, so the return window is your only real remedy for it.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the deep test in the first week and keep the result. It establishes what the machine does when new, which is the comparison every future test needs, and it is the only item on this list that finds a fault the seller cannot dismiss as subjective.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot check the screen, ports or keyboard; those are yours to exercise deliberately.
- We cannot read the battery report, which the operating system generates in one command.
Asked, in people’s own words
- How long do I have to return a new laptop?
- Typically fourteen to thirty days depending on the retailer and your country, and consumer law in many places adds rights on top. Whatever the window is, treat the first week as the deadline: leaving the checks until the final days means any problem arrives in a rush.
- What should I check on a new laptop first?
- The screen on full white and full black, every port with a real device, and the battery report. Those three take fifteen minutes and find most of the faults that justify an exchange. Then run a sustained test, which finds the one they will not.
- Is it worth stress testing a brand new laptop?
- Yes, and the first week is the moment. A machine that throttles far below its cohort is a legitimate return, and that is invisible during normal use until the first real workload arrives, which is usually well after the window has closed.
