What should I check before buying a student laptop?

Start with the course, not the shop: departments publish requirements, and an architecture or engineering course changes the answer completely from a humanities one. After that gate, student priorities invert the spec-sheet order: battery life, weight and durability decide daily happiness more than processor tiers do.

The money question deserves honesty: a well-checked used or refurbished business laptop usually beats a new budget machine at the same price for everything except warranty length. The checklists for both are on this site; the student decision is which risk you would rather manage.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

A budget machine slow out of the box usually ships with a hard drive or 8GB and a load of preinstalled junk: two are fixable cheaply, one is a reason to pick a different model.
