What should I check before buying a laptop for video editing?

Editing is the workload that punishes short bursts of speed, because exports run for minutes and timelines scrub for hours. Check sustained performance first, then memory, then whether the machine has hardware decoding for the codecs your camera actually produces, then storage speed, then the screen.

Everything on that list is checkable in a shop or in the return window, and the first item is the one spec sheets never print.

Check for hardware decode and encode of the specific codec: H.264, H.265 or HEVC, and increasingly AV1 and ProRes. A machine without hardware support for your codec will scrub badly regardless of its processor grade.

Match the machine to your camera's format, not to a general performance tier. This is the single most common reason a fast laptop feels slow in an edit.

Ask for the colour gamut in numbers rather than adjectives: sRGB coverage as a baseline, DCI-P3 coverage if you deliver colour-critical work. Check brightness in nits and whether the panel is glossy or matte for your room.

Do not accept a marketing phrase in place of a coverage figure. If it cannot be stated as a percentage, treat it as an ordinary panel.

Measure it instead of guessing

Do the sustained test in the shop, on the actual unit, before the return window matters. Ten minutes of held load produces the one number that decides your export times, and it is the only item on this list that a specification sheet cannot answer.
