Why is my PC slow while gaming?

On a desktop, poor gaming performance is usually one of five things: the graphics driver, settings or resolution that outrun the card, the processor holding the card back in a demanding game, heat from a case that cannot move enough air, or a power supply at its limit. Which one it is shows in how the slowness behaves: from the first minute or only after warming up, in every game or only some, as a low but steady frame rate or as stutter.

The quickest test needs nothing installed: drop the resolution sharply. If the frame rate jumps, the graphics card was the limit. If it barely moves, the processor was, and a faster card would not have helped.

Slow from the first minute of every game points at settings, a driver, or a mismatch between the processor and the card. Stutter from the start with the frame rate otherwise fine points at the driver, a background process, or a game loading from a hard disk.

Only after minutes of use

Fine for the first ten or twenty minutes and then slower is heat: a case that cannot exhaust what the card and processor produce, dust on the coolers, or a graphics card whose fans are failing. The frame rate falls as the card steps its clocks down to protect itself.

Performance dropped after a driver or Windows update, or a new game runs far worse than its requirements suggest. Stutter that does not track any setting is a driver signature.

The fix

Install the current driver from the card maker's site with a clean install. If a specific version began the problem, roll back to the one before.

Dropping the resolution barely changes the frame rate, one or two processor cores sit near 100 percent in the game's overlay while the card sits well below it, and strategy or simulation games suffer most.

The fix

Close background programs, make sure memory runs at its rated profile in the firmware, and lower processor-heavy settings such as crowd density or draw distance. If it is still short, the processor, not the card, is the upgrade.

4. Heat: case airflow, dust or failing fans

Frame rate is good at first and falls after ten to twenty minutes. The case is hot to the touch, and the card's overlay shows clocks stepping down. Dust is visible on the filters and coolers.

The fix

Clean the filters and coolers, check every case and card fan spins, and set the case fans to a curve that actually moves air under load. On a card several years old, fresh thermal paste and pads often restore its clocks.

5. A power supply at its limit or ageing

The PC restarts or the screen goes black under heavy load, the card's clocks drop suddenly rather than gradually, or the supply's rating is close to the total the card and processor need.

The fix

Compare the supply's rating with the card maker's recommendation. A supply within 100 watts of the load, or more than about seven years old, is the likely cause and is worth replacing before it damages anything.

6. The game loading from a slow or full drive

Stutter and pauses when entering new areas rather than during combat, the game is on a hard disk or a drive with little free space, and disk usage spikes during the pauses.

The fix

Move the game to an SSD with free space. Open-world games in particular stream assets constantly and stutter when the drive cannot keep up.

Measure it instead of guessing

What software cannot tell you here

  • The frame rate you will get in a specific game. That depends on the game and its settings, and only its own benchmark or an overlay can show it.
