Why is my MacBook Air M1 slow?
The M1 Air is the mildest thermal case in the fanless line. Sustained loop testing puts its decline at roughly 10 to 15 percent, with the step arriving eight to ten minutes in, which means heat is rarely the whole story when an M1 Air feels slow today.
On a machine now several years old, the more likely causes are memory pressure on an 8GB configuration, a nearly full drive, accumulated background software, and applications that have grown heavier than the machine was bought for.

Fewer simultaneous applications and tabs helps immediately, and is the only lever available, because the memory is soldered. This is also the reason to buy 16GB on any replacement.
2. A nearly full drive

Get back to at least 15 percent free. On a 256GB machine this is the highest-value hour of maintenance available.
3. Accumulated background software

The fix
Prune Login Items and background extensions in system settings. A machine that has been migrated from an older Mac often carries years of this.
4. The fanless step, which is real but modest here

Nothing to repair. Give the machine a hard surface and cool air, and treat long exports as jobs it completes slowly rather than quickly.
5. Software running under translation

Check whether an application is listed as Intel rather than Apple Silicon in Activity Monitor. Translated applications draw more power for the same work.
The fix
Update to native versions where they exist. Five years after the transition most have them, and the difference is substantial on the older chips.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the test and compare the peak against the settled level. An M1 Air that holds within roughly ten to fifteen percent is behaving exactly as its generation does, which redirects the search to memory and storage where the real problem usually is.
