Problems · Under load

Why is my laptop slow when the battery is removed?

Because the battery is part of the power supply, not just a reserve. Modern processors draw brief spikes far above their average, and the battery smooths those spikes. Without a working one, the charger alone has to supply everything, and the machine reduces its power limits sharply to stay within what the adapter can deliver.

That is why a machine with a dead or removed battery can feel dramatically slower on mains than the same machine did with a healthy battery fitted, even though nothing else has changed.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

Slow from the first second of any load, consistently, because the power limit was reduced before the work began.

Only after minutes of use

The curve is usually flat and low rather than sliding, which distinguishes this from a thermal problem clearly.

The causes, ranked

1. No battery to buffer power spikes

most common

How to confirm it

Machine runs but performs far below its normal level, with no heat and no fan noise to explain it, and only since the battery was removed or failed.

The fix

Fit a working battery. This is not a workaround: on many machines a healthy battery is a requirement for full performance rather than an accessory.

2. A swollen battery that was removed for safety

most common

How to confirm it

The battery was taken out because it had swelled, which was correct, and the machine has been slow since.

The fix

Replace rather than run without. Removing a swollen cell was the right call; leaving the machine batteryless is a performance penalty you do not have to accept.

3. An underpowered charger making it worse

common

How to confirm it

A third-party or travel adapter that supplies less than the original, which the machine now has no battery to supplement.

The fix

Use the maker's full-wattage charger. Without a battery, the adapter's rating becomes the machine's hard ceiling.

4. A battery so worn the machine treats it as absent

common

How to confirm it

The battery is fitted but reports as needing service or shows negligible capacity, and the machine behaves as if none were present.

The fix

The battery report tells you this in seconds, and the answer is the same: replace it.

5. Firmware requiring a battery for full power

occasional

How to confirm it

Some machines document this behaviour explicitly, particularly gaming and workstation models with high peak draw.

The fix

Check the maker's documentation. Where it is documented, this is by design and not something a setting will change.

6. Assuming the machine is dying

occasional

How to confirm it

A dramatic slowdown after a battery failure is easily mistaken for the whole machine failing.

The fix

Test with a new battery before writing the machine off. This is one of the cheapest recoveries of a laptop that seemed finished.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the test and look at the shape. A flat, low curve with no heat is a power problem, and a curve that starts high and slides is thermal. That distinction matters here because the fix for one is a battery and the fix for the other is cooling work, and they are easy to confuse.

What software cannot tell you here

  • We cannot see whether a battery is fitted or what it reports, which the operating system's battery report shows.
  • We cannot read power limits, only their effect on the curve.

Asked, in people’s own words

Can you use a laptop without a battery?
Many will run on mains alone, but often at substantially reduced performance, because the battery normally supplies the brief power spikes the processor needs. It works as a temporary measure and is a poor permanent arrangement, particularly on machines with high peak power draw.
Why is my laptop slow with a dead battery?
Because the machine has reduced its power limits to stay within what the charger alone can deliver. Without a battery to buffer the spikes, it cannot safely draw as much, so it caps itself. Fitting a healthy battery restores the performance immediately.
Will a new battery make my old laptop faster?
If the current battery is dead or removed, yes, sometimes dramatically, because it restores the machine's full power budget. If the battery is merely worn but functional, expect better runtime rather than more speed. The battery report tells you which situation you are in.
