Why is my laptop slow after waking from sleep?

If a restart fixes it and a fresh boot never shows it, this is a resume problem rather than a performance problem. The usual causes are a graphics or storage driver that does not restore its power state cleanly, memory that was paged out and is being read back, network stacks reconnecting, and background jobs that queued while the machine slept.

The distinction matters because the fixes are entirely different from the ones for a generally slow laptop, and most of them are driver and setting changes rather than hardware.

First, notice when it happens

From the first minute

Sluggish for the first ten to sixty seconds after waking and then normal: that is paging, reconnecting and queued background work catching up, and it is largely expected.

Only after minutes of use

Still slow minutes after waking, until a restart: that is a driver or power-state fault, and it is the version worth fixing.

The causes, ranked

1. A driver that does not restore its power state

How to confirm it

Persistently slow after waking until restarted, often with graphics stutter or a display that takes an unusual time to come back.

The fix

Update graphics, chipset and storage drivers from the maker rather than from Windows Update alone. This is the single most common cause of the persistent version.

2. Memory paged out during sleep

How to confirm it

Slow for the first seconds after waking, with high disk activity, then normal. Worse with many applications open and worse on a mechanical drive.

The fix

Largely expected behaviour, and it resolves itself. If it takes minutes rather than seconds, the drive or memory pressure is the real subject.

3. Queued background work waking with the machine

How to confirm it

Sync clients, backup, antivirus scans and update checks all resume at once, and the first minute after waking is their busiest.

The fix

Retime backups and scans away from your usual wake moments. Task Manager during that first minute names the offenders.

4. Network reconnection and mapped drives

Applications hang rather than the machine being slow, especially anything holding a network drive, a VPN or a cloud folder.

The fix

Reconnect the VPN deliberately after waking, and check whether an application is waiting on a drive that no longer exists.

5. Modern standby behaving badly

The machine is warm and the battery lower than it should be after sleeping, suggesting it never truly slept.

The fix

Check the sleep study report on Windows, and consider hibernation instead of standby on machines where this recurs. A machine that stays half-awake wakes badly.

6. A failing drive

Waking gets slower over weeks, with freezes and errors, rather than being consistently slow.

The fix

Back up, then read the drive's health attributes. Slow reads after sleep can be an early symptom rather than a quirk.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the test twice: once shortly after waking and once after a full restart. If the two curves match, the machine is fine and the sluggishness is confined to the resume path. If the post-wake run is genuinely worse, a driver is not restoring its power state and that is a specific thing to update.

Why is my laptop slow only after sleep?
Because waking involves work that booting does not: drivers restoring power states, memory being read back from disk, networks reconnecting and queued background jobs starting at once. A machine that is fast from a cold boot and slow from sleep has a resume problem, which is a narrower and more fixable thing than general slowness.
Should I shut down instead of sleeping my laptop?
You should not have to, and sleeping is better for both convenience and the drive. If shutting down is the only thing that keeps the machine quick, treat that as a symptom to fix rather than a habit to adopt, and start with graphics and chipset drivers from the maker.
Does sleep drain the battery?
Traditional sleep drains very little. Modern standby, which keeps parts of the machine awake for notifications and sync, can drain noticeably and leave the machine warm in a bag. If you find the battery meaningfully lower after a night asleep, the sleep study report will show whether it was actually sleeping.
