Why does my laptop keep shutting down randomly?

A laptop that switches off without warning is usually protecting itself, and the moment of the shutdown tells you from what. Under heavy load points at heat or power delivery; on battery at a plausible percentage points at worn cells; at random moments regardless of load points at drivers or failing hardware.

Note when it happens over a few occurrences before changing anything. That pattern is worth more than any single tool, because these causes need completely different responses.

Instant cut-off with no warning, no error, no slowdown first: that is a protective shutdown or a power fault rather than a software crash.

Only after minutes of use

Shutdowns that arrive only after several minutes of heavy work, having slowed down first, are the thermal pattern, and the most fixable of the set.

How to confirm it

Happens during games, exports or other heavy work, after minutes rather than seconds, often preceded by loud fans and noticeable slowing.

The fix

The cooling ladder: clear the vents, hard surface with the rear raised, then a service and repaste. A machine shutting down thermally has passed beyond throttling and needs attention rather than tolerance.

2. A battery that can no longer deliver

How to confirm it

Happens on battery, often at a consistent percentage, and never when plugged in. The battery report shows health well below design capacity.

The fix

Replace the battery. Until then, stay plugged in for anything that matters, and treat the last third of the gauge as unavailable.

3. Power delivery: the charger or the port

How to confirm it

Happens plugged in, especially with an underpowered or third-party charger, or when the cable is moved. A loose barrel jack or a worn USB-C port produces exactly this.

The fix

Test with the original full-wattage charger in a different socket. If the shutdowns follow the charger, you have found it; if they follow the port, that is a repair.

4. Drivers, firmware or an operating system fault

Shutdowns or restarts unrelated to load or battery level, sometimes after an update. Check the system event log for critical power events, which distinguish a clean shutdown from an abrupt one.

The fix

Update firmware, graphics drivers and the operating system. If the shutdowns started with a specific update, rolling back that driver is a fair test.

5. Failing memory or storage

Accompanied by crashes, corrupted files, blue screens or kernel panics rather than clean shutdowns. Memory diagnostics and drive health tools produce evidence here.

The fix

Run the memory test and read the drive's health attributes. Failing storage is urgent because it takes your data with it; back up first, diagnose second.

6. A failing power circuit on the board

How to confirm it

Everything else has been eliminated: new battery, known-good charger, cool machine, clean software, and the shutdowns continue.

The fix

A service diagnosis. On an older machine this is the point where the repair cost should be weighed against replacement rather than paid automatically.

Measure it instead of guessing

Run the test plugged in and again on battery. If the machine completes it on mains and cuts out on battery, the battery is the answer. If it cuts out under load in both, you are looking at heat or power delivery, and the curve before the cut-off usually shows the machine sliding first.

What software cannot tell you here
