Why does my laptop shut down at 30% battery?

An aged battery can report a charge it cannot actually deliver. The gauge estimates remaining energy, but worn cells collapse in voltage the moment real current is drawn, and the machine shuts down instantly to protect itself. The percentage was not a lie so much as an estimate the cells could no longer honour.

Cold makes it worse, load makes it worse, and age is the underlying cause. Occasionally the gauge itself has drifted and a single full cycle helps, but a machine dying at 30% under load has usually reached the end of its battery's useful life.

The fix

Replace the battery. Until then, treat the bottom 30 to 40% as reserve rather than range, and keep the charger nearer than you used to.

The fix

One full cycle can resync it: charge to full, use down to automatic shutdown, charge uninterrupted to full again. Worth doing once, not repeatedly, since each pass spends a cycle.

3. Cold

Shutdowns happen outdoors, in cold rooms, or shortly after bringing the machine in from the cold. Lithium chemistry delivers less at low temperature.

The fix

Let the machine warm to room temperature before demanding much of it. A battery that only fails in the cold may have years of ordinary life left indoors.

The fix

Plug in for heavy work, which is good practice anyway. This pattern often appears a year before the battery fails at light loads too, so treat it as notice.

The fix

Update firmware, and on Macs follow Apple's current guidance for resetting power management. If the report shows healthy cells and the machine still misbehaves, this is the remaining suspect.

Measure it instead of guessing

Before replacing anything, run the test plugged in. A machine that performs normally on mains has healthy silicon and a battery problem, which is a cheap and specific repair. A machine that also struggles plugged in has a second problem, and the battery was only the loudest symptom.

What software cannot tell you here

Why does my battery drop from 30% to 0% instantly?
Because the gauge was estimating from a curve the cells no longer follow. Worn batteries hold a plausible voltage at rest and collapse under current, so the estimate is fine until the moment it is tested, and then it is not. It is a symptom of capacity loss rather than a gauge bug.
Will calibrating my battery fix this?
Sometimes, if the problem is a drifted estimator rather than worn cells. One careful full cycle is worth trying. If the battery report already shows health well below 80%, calibration will make the percentage more honest without giving you any more runtime.
Is it dangerous to keep using a battery that does this?
Not dangerous in itself, though sudden shutdowns risk unsaved work and repeated deep discharges age the cells faster. The danger sign to watch for separately is swelling, which is a reason to stop using and charging the machine immediately.
