What should I do if I left my laptop in a hot car?

Bring it inside and let it return to room temperature before switching it on, which usually takes an hour or two. Do not charge it while hot, and do not try to cool it quickly in a fridge, because condensation inside the machine is a worse problem than the heat was.

A parked car in summer routinely reaches temperatures well beyond the storage range laptops are specified for, and the battery is the component that suffers first and most.

Do nothing immediately except move it somewhere cool and leave it alone. Switching a very hot machine on is the one action worth avoiding.

Only after minutes of use

After a couple of hours at room temperature, check for swelling, then start it and watch how it behaves under load before trusting it with anything important.

Nothing recovers lost capacity. Check the report, and treat a single very hot day as having aged the battery rather than as having broken it.

The fix

Stop using and charging it, and have the battery replaced. Extreme heat is one of the events that triggers swelling.

The fix

Carry on, and avoid a repeat. One hot afternoon rarely ends a laptop; a summer of them measurably shortens the battery's life.

Measure it instead of guessing

Once the machine is at room temperature, run a sustained test as a general health check. A normal curve alongside unchanged battery health is good evidence that the machine came through it, and it gives you a comparison point if you ever need to argue that something changed afterwards.

What temperature is too hot for a laptop in storage?
Most makers specify storage limits well below what a parked car reaches on a sunny day, which is why cars are the classic case. The battery is the limiting component, and heat damage to it is cumulative and permanent rather than something the machine recovers from once it cools.
Can heat permanently damage a laptop?
It can permanently reduce battery capacity, which is the most common outcome, and in more extreme cases cause swelling, adhesive failure or display marks. The processor and storage usually survive, so a machine that starts normally afterwards and holds a sustained load has probably lost battery life rather than function.
Should I put a hot laptop in the fridge?
No. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the machine, and moisture on live electronics is a worse outcome than the heat. Let it come back to room temperature on its own, out of the sun, which takes an hour or two and risks nothing.
