Is it bad for my laptop to run hot?
Mostly the fear is misplaced and the cost is misplaced with it: heat almost never kills the processor, because chips throttle and shut down long before damage. What chronic heat genuinely taxes is the battery, which ages faster warm, and the fan bearings, which work hardest exactly when cooling is worst.
Two heat situations do demand action now rather than eventually: shutdowns under load (protection's last resort) and a swollen battery (a safety matter, not a performance one). Everything else is a performance-and-lifespan optimisation, not an emergency.

5. The two real alarms

Measure it instead of guessing
The damage question becomes tractable when reframed as the cost question, and the cost is measurable: run the sustained test and the decay percentage is what heat currently takes from you every heavy session. Service the cooling, run again, and the recovered points are the answer to whether the heat was worth caring about.
What software cannot tell you here
- No temperatures, and no battery wear rate from a browser: degrees belong to sensor tools, wear to the OS battery report's history.

- Processor heat, no: it self-limits far below any such point. The lithium battery is the component with genuine (and rare) fire risk, which is why swelling is the one symptom this site treats as urgent, and why punctures and crush damage matter more than warm keyboards ever will.
- Should I stop gaming if my laptop gets hot?
- Not for the machine's safety: it will throttle before harming itself. Stop, or rather service, when frames fade or it shuts down, because those say the cooling has fallen behind, and playing through shutdowns repeats the least healthy event a hot machine has.
- Does heat slow down a laptop permanently?
- No: throttling is temporary by design, and speed returns when temperature falls.
