How do I make my laptop battery last longer?
In order of what they return: lower the screen brightness, find and stop whatever is running in the background, use an efficiency or balanced power mode, reduce the refresh rate if the panel is fixed at a high one, and disconnect devices drawing power from the ports.
Brightness is first because the screen is usually the largest single consumer in a laptop, and it is the setting people are most reluctant to touch. Everything else on the list is smaller, and most of the advice circulating online is smaller still.

The fix
Use the lowest comfortable brightness, and enable automatic brightness if the machine has a sensor. Unexciting and more effective than everything below it.
2. Background processes you did not start

Sort the task viewer by CPU and by power usage where offered. Sync clients, indexing, updates and runaway browser tabs are the usual list.
The fix
Quit or reschedule them. A single stuck process can halve a day's runtime while the machine appears to be idle.
3. Power mode

Performance mode raises power limits continuously, which costs runtime even when you are only writing.
The fix
Balanced or efficiency on battery, performance on mains. Machines that switch automatically handle this well.
4. Refresh rate and connected devices

A fixed high refresh rate costs real power, and phones, drives and dongles charging from the ports draw from your battery.
The fix
Lower the refresh rate on battery where the panel is fixed, and unplug what you are not using.
5. Battery health rather than habits

The fix
Replace the battery. At that point you are optimising a tank with a hole in it, and the settings above are recovering minutes rather than hours.

Spend your effort on the top two items. Most battery advice lists are ordered by how easy they are to write rather than by how much they return.
Measure it instead of guessing
Runtime is outside what a browser measures, but the test answers a related question worth knowing: whether the machine performs normally on battery. A machine that both drains fast and performs poorly unplugged has a worn battery rather than a settings problem, and no amount of tuning will fix it.
What software cannot tell you here

- The screen, in most ordinary use, followed by whatever is running in the background. Processor load matters when you are doing heavy work, but for a day of writing and browsing, brightness and background processes explain most of the difference between a long day and a short one.
- Does closing apps save battery?
- Closing applications that are actually doing work, yes. Closing idle applications that are simply open, barely at all, since a suspended application costs almost nothing. The useful version is finding the one process that is busy, rather than closing everything on principle.
- Does battery saver mode actually work?
- It helps, mostly by reducing brightness, limiting background activity and capping performance, which are the same levers you can pull deliberately. Doing them yourself gives you the same saving without the performance cap applying when you do need speed.
