WebGPU test. Supported, and on which chip?

WebGPU is the browser's newer path to the graphics chip, used for compute and modern 3D. This check asks the browser whether it has WebGPU, whether it gives an adapter, what the adapter calls itself, whether it is a fallback that runs on the processor, and which features and limits it offers. Nothing is drawn or timed; for a speed figure there is the WebGPU compute test.

In short

WebGPU test: the answer first

A WebGPU test asks the browser whether it has WebGPU and whether it will give an adapter, then reads what the adapter calls itself, whether it is a fallback that runs on the processor, and which features and limits it offers. Not supported and no adapter are different failures with different fixes.

Reading your result

Not supported
The browser has no WebGPU. Update it, or use one of the browsers the page lists.
No adapter
The browser has WebGPU but refused an adapter: usually a blocked driver or acceleration turned off. chrome://gpu gives the reason.
Fallback adapter
WebGPU works, but in software. The hardware acceleration steps apply.

What it measures

Measured here, not assumed.

Support
Whether the browser has navigator.gpu at all, and whether requestAdapter() gives an adapter. Not supported and no adapter are different failures with different fixes.
The adapter
Its vendor, architecture, device and description, as adapter.info gives them. Chrome often gives a vendor and an architecture and no model; the page shows what it is given and never looks a name up.
Fallback adapter
Whether the adapter calls itself a fallback adapter: a software implementation that runs on the processor. A page on a fallback adapter works but runs far slower than on a graphics chip.
Features and limits
The optional features the adapter offers, such as shader-f16, timestamp-query and subgroups, and its limits: the largest buffer, the largest storage binding, the largest 2D texture, and the compute workgroup sizes.
A second chip
The adapter the browser gives when asked for high performance. If it names a different chip from the default, the machine has two and the browser can choose.

If it fails

The usual failures, and what fixes each.

WebGPU is not supported
Chrome and Edge 113 or later have WebGPU on Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, and Chrome 121 or later on Android; Safari 26 has it on macOS, iOS and iPadOS; Firefox has it on Windows from version 141 and behind a flag elsewhere. Update the browser or use one of those.
No adapter found
The browser has WebGPU but gave no adapter: usually a graphics driver it does not trust, or graphics acceleration turned off. Turn acceleration on, install the driver from the chip maker, and read the reason under chrome://gpu or edge://gpu.
It runs on a fallback adapter
The browser is running WebGPU in software. The same steps apply: graphics acceleration on, a current driver, and on a Windows laptop with two chips, High performance for the browser in Settings, System, Display, Graphics.

Where a browser stops

What it cannot tell you.

  • Graphics memory size, clocks and temperature, which WebGPU does not give a page.
  • The driver version, and why a browser blocklisted a driver. chrome://gpu or edge://gpu lists the reason.
  • How fast the chip is. The WebGPU compute test measures that, with its count stated.

Privacy

Nothing leaves this page.

The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.

Questions

WebGPU test, answered

Is WebGPU supported in my browser?
Run the check above. It says supported with the adapter's name, not supported when the browser has no WebGPU at all, or no adapter when the browser has it but would not give one.
Why does it say WebGPU is not supported, no adapter found?
The browser has WebGPU but refused an adapter. The usual causes are a graphics driver on the browser's blocklist, graphics acceleration switched off, or a remote or virtual machine with no usable graphics chip. chrome://gpu or edge://gpu gives the browser's own reason.
What is a WebGPU fallback adapter?
A software implementation of WebGPU that runs on the processor. Pages work on it, slowly. The check says when the adapter reports itself as one.
What is the difference between WebGPU and WebGL?
WebGL is the older path, based on OpenGL ES, and every current browser has it; every graphics stage of the SystemCheck stress test uses WebGL 2. WebGPU is newer, maps to Direct3D 12, Metal and Vulkan, and adds compute shaders, but not every browser has it yet.
Does WebGPU show how much graphics memory I have?
No. WebGPU gives limits such as the largest buffer a page may make, which are not the memory size. No browser API reports graphics memory.
