Viewing angle test. Tilt, and watch the grey.
Every panel looks different off centre; how much depends on its type. After Lagom's viewing angle patterns, the screen fills with a grey gradient over dark steps, then fine lines beside grey bars. Move your head or tilt the screen and say whether the picture holds, shifts in brightness or colour, or inverts in the dark tones. It is informational: a shift is a property of the panel, not a fault.
One check
- Viewing angles
One check after another, with your progress along the top and a plain verdict on each. Nothing you show the camera or say into the microphone leaves this page.
What it measures
Measured here, not assumed.
- A grey gradient and dark steps
- A colour cast in the grey, or dark steps that vanish or brighten, as you move, is a viewing angle shift.
- Fine lines and grey bars
- One-pixel lines beside a solid grey: if one changes against the other as you tilt, the panel's gamma moves with the angle.
- What you saw
- Steady, shifts, or dark tones invert. All three are recorded for information.
If it fails
The usual failures, and what fixes each.
- The edges look different from the middle
- On a large screen up close, the edges are already off angle. Sit further back, or centre and tilt the screen so your eyes meet its middle square on.
- Dark tones invert from below
- Typical of TN panels. Tilt the screen so you look at it square on; no setting removes it.
Where a browser stops
What it cannot tell you.
- Your eyes judge it; a page cannot see the angle you are at.
- The page does not name the panel type. A strong inversion is typical of TN, and a side-on wash typical of VA, but neither is proof.
Privacy
Nothing leaves this page.
The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.
Questions
Viewing angle test, answered
- How do I test viewing angles?
- Fill the screen with a gradient and fine patterns, then move your head side to side and up and down. Watch for a colour cast, a brightness change, or dark tones that invert.
- Which panel type has the best viewing angles?
- IPS and OLED hold their look furthest off centre; VA washes out from the side; TN shifts most, especially from below. This page does not identify your panel.
- Is a viewing angle shift a fault?
- No. It is how the panel type behaves, and every screen shifts at some angle. It is a reason to choose a different panel, not to return one.
