How to document laptop throttling for a warranty claim

SystemCheck Updated 29 October 2026

Record the problem the same way more than once: same power source, same power mode, same surface, same browser, nothing else running.

  • A saved SystemCheck report carries a fingerprint the site signs over its measured figures, so anyone can check at /verify that the figures were not edited.
  • A browser measures work done, not temperature or clocks. Pair the report with a sensor log, such as HWiNFO on Windows, taken during the same run.
  • Whether throttling is a defect is the maker's call. The report shows what happened; it does not say the laptop is faulty.

The short answer

Give the warranty desk something it can repeat and check. Run the same test two or three times under the same conditions, save each report, note the conditions, and log temperatures and clocks with a sensor tool during the run. A falling curve together with a sensor log showing the chip at its temperature limit is a much stronger case than a description of the symptom.

What to record

Write these down for every run, so the desk can reproduce it.

  • The laptop's model and serial number, the operating system version and the browser version.
  • Plugged in or on battery, and the power mode chosen in the operating system or the maker's utility.
  • The surface it sat on and the room's conditions in words, for example a desk in a warm room.
  • Which run you chose, Standard or Deep, and the saved report's link.
  • The sensor tool's log file from the same run, if you took one.

Why the fingerprint helps

A screenshot can be edited. A saved SystemCheck report prints a 16-character fingerprint, signed by the site over the report's measured figures, its measurement revision and the time it was stored. Anyone holding the link and the fingerprint can paste them into the verify page and get matches, does not match, or not found. That makes the report a record the desk can check rather than take on trust.

What a browser cannot prove

A web page sees how much work got done each second, not why. A slide after the chip settles is consistent with heat, a power limit, a background program or the browser itself. The report names what a shape is consistent with; it does not name a cause, and it does not say a machine is defective. A sensor log is what ties the slide to a temperature or power limit, and the maker decides whether that is within its specification.

Questions

Will a SystemCheck report be accepted for a warranty claim?
That depends on the maker. The report is a checkable record of measured performance under stated conditions. Most warranty desks also run their own diagnostics, so treat it as supporting evidence.
Is throttling a warranty fault?
Not by itself. Every modern processor throttles to stay inside its limits. It may be a fault when a machine falls far below what the same model does under the same conditions, for example from a failed fan or poor contact between the chip and its cooler. The maker judges that.
